SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a cold and damp Saturday, the Wofford College baseball team sweep both games in a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers won the first game 14-5, scoring five runs each in the seventh and eighth innings. In the second game, Wofford scored four runs in the sixth inning and added two in the eighth to secure the win.

Wofford opens the season 9-6, while Gardner-Webb is 7-4 overall. The Terriers were led by
Andrew Orzel with three hits and three runs scored in the first game, with
Brett Rodriguez driving in three runs.
Hayes Heinecke struck out ten batters in the second game, while
Lawson Hill had three hits and an RBI.

In the first game, Gardner-Webb had a runner reach on an error in the top of the first. Wofford's first three batters in the first walked. With one out,
Hudson Byorick reached on a fielding error to plate a run. A bases loaded single by
Josh Congdon added a run as the Terriers had a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning. The Runnin' Bulldogs were retired in order in the top of the second inning.

Mike Brown was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the second.
Andrew Orzel singled and a single by
Colin Davis made it a 3-0 game.
Brett Rodriguez walked to load the bases, but back-to-back fielder's choices ended the inning.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had a batter hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the third. After a walk, a single drove in a run for a 3-1 score. Wofford opened the bottom of the third with a single by
Josh Congdon and he moved to second on an error. With two outs, Congdon stole third and
Mike Brown walked and stole second base. A pop up ended the scoring chance. Gardner-Webb opened the fourth inning with a double and the runner was on third with one out. A fly ball to
Colin Davis was the second out and he threw the runner out at the plate for the double play. Wofford left a runner on third base to end the fourth inning.

A double led off the fifth inning for Gardner-Webb, but two strikeouts and a ground out ended the top half.
Josh Congdon singled to begin the bottom of the fifth and
John Dempsey was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners and a sacrifice fly by
Mike Brown gave Wofford a 4-1 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs began the sixth inning with a triple. A ground out plated the run to cut the advantage to 4-2. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Gardner-Webb had runners in scoring position after an error and double. After a ground out, a single through the left side drove in a run to make it a 4-3 game. A line out to
Matty Brown at shortstop and a strikeout ended the top half with two runners stranded. In the bottom of the seventh,
John Dempsey led off with his first career home run to give Wofford a 5-3 lead.

Brett Rodriguez singled and went to second on the throw as he drove in two runs for a 7-3 advantage. A sacrifice fly by
Lawson Hill scored a run and an error on the play allowed a second run to cross the plate as the Terriers took a 9-3 lead at the end of the seventh inning.

A single in the top of the eighth was followed by a home run by Chandler Redmond to cut the lead to 9-5.
John Dempsey doubled to begin the bottom of the eighth inning and he scored on a single by
Matty Brown.
Mike Brown walked and
Andrew Orzel singled. A fielder's choice by
Brett Rodriguez plated a run and a ground out from
Lawson Hill added a run for a 13-5 lead. A bases loaded walk to
John Dempsey added a run and Wofford had a 14-5 advantage to end the eighth inning. The Runnin' Bulldogs had one hit with two outs in the top of the ninth and a ground out ended the game.

Austin Higginbotham (2-1) started for Wofford and went 6.2 innings with three runs allowed on six hits, along with four strikeouts.
Rasesh Pandya struck out the lone batter he faced.
Jake Hershman went the final two innings with two runs allowed on three hits and one strikeout.

Gardner-Webb starter Isaac Campbell (1-1) threw three innings with three runs allowed on four hits, along with three strikeouts. Eugene Snyder worked two innings with one run allowed on one hit, while recording one strikeout. Aaron Stewart went 1.1 innings with five runs allowed on five hits and one strikeout. Chase Lane added two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed. Cody Dooley worked two-thirds of an inning and gave up five runs on three hits. Caleb Bissette recorded the final out for Gardner-Webb.

The second game began with the Runnin' Bulldogs leaving one runner on base in the top of the first inning and the Terriers going in order in the bottom half. Gardner-Webb had two singles in the top of the second inning, but both runners were stranded. Wofford added singles by
Lawson Hill and
Hudson Byorick in the bottom of the second, but a double play and fly ball ended the scoring chance.

Gardner-Webb left one runner on base in the top of the third after a single. Wofford was retired in order to end the third inning and the Runnin' Bulldogs went in order in the top of the fourth inning.
Brett Rodriguez was stranded in the bottom of the fourth after reaching on a walk.

After the Runnin' Bulldogs were retired in order in the top of the fifth inning,
Matty Brown had a bunt single with two outs for the Terriers. A fly ball ended the fifth inning and Gardner-Webb was retired in order in the top of the sixth.
Andrew Orzel led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and
Brett Rodriguez doubled with one out. A single through the right side by
Lawson Hill drove in Orzel for a 1-0 lead.
Hudson Byorick reached on a fielder's choice, but the throw to home plate went to the backstop and two runs scored.
Ethan Cornelius walked and the Terriers had runners on the corners. A double steal attempt scored Byorick during the rundown and Wofford had a 4-0 lead after six innings.

The Runnin' Bulldogs were retired in order in the top of the seventh inning. Wofford had a runner reach in the bottom of the seventh on a walk, but was picked off second base. Gardner-Webb had a double with one out in the top of the eighth. A pair of strikeouts ended the top half. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth,
Lawson Hill singled and
Hudson Byorick walked. They advanced on a wild pitch and a single by
John Dempsey scored Hill, while an error on the play allowed Byorick to score for a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Gardner-Webb led off with a single. An RBI double made it 6-1 and a ground out plated a run for a 6-2 score. They added a single with two outs before a strikeout ended the game.

Wofford starter
Hayes Heinecke (3-0) threw seven scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and struck out a career-high ten batters with only one walk issued.
Matt Ellmyer earned his first save of the season with two runs allowed on four hits in the final two innings, along with three strikeouts.

Landon Mitchell (1-2) started for Gardner-Webb and went six innings with four runs allowed on five hits, along with six strikeouts. Luke Williamson went the final two innings with two runs allowed on two hits and three strikeouts.
