Baseball Splits Doubleheader With VMI

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday, the Wofford College baseball team split a doubleheader with VMI at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers won the first game 15-4, using five runs in the fifth inning to pull away. In the second game, the Keydets earned a 5-4 win as Zak Kent threw a complete game.
 
Wofford is 23-15 on the season and 6-3 in the Southern Conference. VMI is 9-27 overall and 5-7 in the league. Brett Rodriguez, Lawson Hill and Hudson Byorick each had three hits and three RBIs to lead Wofford in the first game. Rodriguez had two hits in the second game, while John Dempsey drove in both runs for the Terriers.
 
In the first game, the Keydets had a single to lead off the first inning. The runner was picked off to end the top half. Andrew Orzel singled to start the bottom of the first but was stranded at third base. VMI began the second inning with a triple. With two outs, a double drove in the run for a 1-0 lead. Wofford went in order to end the second inning and VMI was retired in order in the top of the third inning.
 
Mike Brown singled with one out in the bottom of the third inning. He stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. A single with one out by Brett Rodriguez scored Brown to tie the game at 1-1. Rodriguez stole second and third then scored on a triple to right field by Lawson Hill for a 2-1 lead. A double by Hudson Byorick drove in Hill to make it a 3-1 game. The Keydets left one on base in the top of the fourth after a single.
 
To lead off the bottom of the fourth, Colin Davis cleared the fence in left field for a 4-1 lead. It was his fifth home run of the season. Nolen Hester followed with a double before a fielder's choice and double play ended the inning. The Keydets went in order in the top of the fifth frame. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Brett Rodriguez singled and stole second. A single up the middle by Lawson Hill scored Rodriguez for a 5-1 advantage and Hill moved to second on the throw home. Hudson Byorick added an RBI single and the Terriers had a 6-1 lead through five innings.
 
In the top of the sixth, the Keydets had one out when a single was followed by an RBI double to cut the lead to 6-2. Another double had two runners in scoring position before a pop up and foul out ended the top half. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Wofford had the bases loaded after a walk, single and walk. Brett Rodriguez drove in two runs on a single to make it an 8-2 lead. Lawson Hill walked to load the bases and a sacrifice fly by Hudson Byorick brought home a run. A double by John Dempsey to right field plated two more runs and Wofford had an 11-2 advantage.
 
The Keydets stranded one runner in the top of the seventh after a single with two outs. Back-to-back walks opened the bottom of the seventh for Wofford. Mike Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a double by Andrew Orzel cleared them for a 14-2 lead. A single scored Orzel for a 15-2 score after seven innings. The Keydets were retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. Wofford left one on base in the bottom of the eighth after a single by Alec Cargin. The Keydets had back-to-back home runs to open the top of the ninth to make it a 15-4 final score.
 
Wofford starter Hayes Heinecke (7-0) went seven innings with two runs allowed on eight hits, along with eight strikeouts. Ty Reginelli threw the final two innings with two runs allowed and three strikeouts.  
 
Adam Jewell (0-6) started for the Keydets and went 5.1 innings with nine runs allowed on eleven hits. Michael Spence threw two-thirds of an inning with four runs allowed on two hits. Seth Nichols went the final two innings with two runs allowed on four hits.
 
The second game started with the Keydets being retired in order in the top of the first inning. Brett Rodriguez doubled with one out in the bottom of the first. He was caught stealing third and a strikeout ended the first inning. VMI led off the second with a double, but the runner was stranded at third.
 
Hudson Byorick singled to lead off the bottom of the second. John Dempsey followed by crushing a ball over the batting cages in right field for a 2-0 lead. It was his sixth home run of the season. The Keydets had one out in the third when they loaded the bases with a double, walk and hit by pitch. A double drove in two runs to tie the game at 2-2. Wofford was then retired in order in the bottom of the third inning.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, the Keydets led off with back-to-back singles. A double drove in a run, while back-to-back bunts each added runs for a 5-2 advantage. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the fourth and Jake Hershman struck out the side in the top of the fifth. The Terriers went in order to end the fifth. VMI was retired in order in the top of the sixth.
 
Mike Brown singled to open the bottom of the sixth. With one out Brett Rodriguez singled and moved to second on a throw to third. Mike Brown scored on a wild pitch for a 5-3 score. A ground out by Lawson Hill allowed Rodriguez to score to cut the lead to 5-4. The Keydets led off the top of the seventh with a double. A pair of strikeouts and a ground out sent the game to the stretch. Wofford was retired in order to end the seventh inning.
 
With two outs in the top of the eighth, the Keydets had a bunt single but the runner was caught stealing second to end the half. The Terriers were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth. VMI had a single to begin the ninth inning and advanced the runner on a sacrifice bunt. A strikeout and ground out ended the top half of the ninth. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
 
David Yourke started for the Terriers and went 2.2 innings with two runs allowed on three hits, along with two strikeouts. Jake Hershman (1-2) threw 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Rasesh Pandya worked 2.0 innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts. Reece Maniscalco recorded the final two outs.
 
VMI starter Zak Kent (5-2) threw a complete game with four runs allowed on five hits. He struck out 11 batters and did not issue a walk.  
 
The Terriers will travel to Winthrop on Tuesday night before beginning a Southern Conference series at ETSU on Thursday night.
