SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Friday, the Wofford College baseball team dropped both games in a doubleheader against Furman at Russell C. King Field. The Paladins scored in the first inning of the first game and used three runs in the sixth inning to secure the victory. Wofford had a 2-1 lead after three innings of the second game, but the Paladins scored three runs in the fourth and three runs in the seventh to pull away.

Wofford is 30-12 on the season and 11-8 in the Southern Conference. Furman is 23-27 overall and 11-9 in league play. The Terriers had nine hits in the first game, including two each by
Hudson Byorick,
Colin Davis and
Reed Massey, with Massey driving in two runs. In the second game, Wofford had eleven hits with five players having two hits each. The Paladins had 13 hits in the first game and ten in the second. Dax Roper had three RBIs in the first game and Banks Griffith drove in three runs in the second game.

To begin the first game, the Paladins had two runners on base with two outs after an error and single. A single to right field scored a run for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Wofford was retired in order to end the opening inning. In the top of the second, Furman had a lead-off single. The runner was picked off and two ground outs ended the top half. The Terriers went in order to close the second inning.

After a lead-off double in the top of the third inning, a home run with one out by Dax Roper gave the Paladins a 3-0 advantage. Furman added a single and a double before a pop up ended the top of the third.
Andrew Orzel singled to begin the bottom of the third inning. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, a single by
Reed Massey scored Orzel for a 3-1 game. Singles by
Brett Rodriguez and
Hudson Byorick had the bases loaded with two outs. A walk by
Lawson Hill plated a run for a 3-2 score before a fielder's choice left three runners stranded at the end of the third.

With one out in the top of the fourth inning, the Paladins had a single and the runner advanced on a wild pitch. An RBI single made it a 4-2 lead.
Colin Davis led off the bottom of the fourth with a double.
Matt Pagano walked with one out but a pair of fly balls ended the inning. The Paladins were retired in order in the top of the fifth inning.

The Terriers had a single by
Hudson Byorick in the bottom of the fifth before a double play ended the inning. Furman had a double to begin the sixth inning and with one out an infield single put runners on the corners. An error fielding a bunt scored a run and an RBI single plated a run for a 6-2 lead. Another RBI single made it 7-2 in the middle of the sixth inning. Wofford was retired in order to end the sixth inning and both teams were retired in order in the seventh inning. Furman left one runner on base in the top of the eighth after a single. Â

Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Paladins went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth inning. With one out in the bottom of the ninth,
Colin Davis singled.
Alec Cargin added a single with two outs and a single by
Reed Massey scored a run before the final out was recorded at second base.

Hayes Heinecke (9-1) went 5.1 innings with seven runs allowed on a season-high 12 hits, along with three strikeouts.
Anthony Garcia threw the final 3.2 innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.

Furman starter John Michael Bertrand (4-4) went eight innings with two runs allowed on six hits, along with five strikeouts. Rob Hughes allowed one run on three hits in the ninth inning.

In the second game, Furman was retired in order in the top of the first inning and Wofford stranded one runner after a walk. In the top of the second inning the Paladins led off with a double and a single to put runners on the corners. A sacrifice bunt scored a run for a 1-0 advantage.
John Dempsey singled to start the bottom of the second and
Colin Davis followed with a walk. The runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt and with two outs an infield single by
Reed Massey drove in a run to tie the game at 1-1. A double steal moved Massey to second and Davis scored for a 2-1 lead.

With two outs in the top of the third inning, the Paladins had a single and a hit by pitch but both runners were stranded. Wofford had two outs in the bottom of the third when
Lawson Hill singled and
John Dempsey walked.
Colin Davis reached on a strikeout and wild pitch to load the bases. A fly ball stranded three runners at the end of the third inning. Furman had two outs in the top of the fourth when an error and a single, along with a throwing error, had runners in scoring position. A single drove in both runs for a 3-2 lead. The runner advanced on a failed pick off and scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-2 game.

Alec Cargin led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before being stranded. The Paladins opened the fifth inning with a walk and left the runner on second base.
Hudson Byorick walked to begin the bottom of the fifth and
John Dempsey singled with one out. A strikeout and fly ball ended the inning for the Terriers. The Paladins left one runner on base in the top of the sixth after a walk.

In the bottom of the sixth,
Reed Massey singled with one out and
Mike Brown followed with a hit-and-run single to put runners on the corners. A single by
Brett Rodriguez scored Massey to cut the lead to 4-3 before a double play ended the inning. A double led off the seventh inning for the Paladins and was followed by a walk. After a strikeout, a RBI single made it a 5-3 game and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. A double down the left line scored two runs for a 7-3 lead before a double play sent the game to the stretch. Â

Lawson Hill had an infield single to lead off the bottom of the seventh and
John Dempsey followed with a walk. A foul out and double play ended the inning. Furman added two runs in the top of the eighth inning after a lead-off walk was followed by a pair of RBI singles for a 9-3 advantage. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth,
Mike Brown singled and
Brett Rodriguez doubled but both were stranded. The Paladins had one runner walk in the ninth, but was thrown out trying to advance to second. In the bottom of the ninth with two outs,
Colin Davis tripled and a ground ball ended the game.

David Yourke (1-4) started for the Terriers and went 3.2 innings with four runs allowed on five hits. Only one run was earned and he had one strikeout.
Reece Maniscalco threw 2.1 innings and gave up two runs on two hits, along with two strikeouts.
Rasesh Pandya went two innings with one run allowed on two hits and a strikeout.
Jake Hershman gave up two runs on two hits in an inning and had two strikeouts.
Ty Reginelli did not allow a hit in the ninth.

Furman starter David Dunlavey (5-7) worked 5.1 innings with three runs allowed on seven hits and three strikeouts. Jordan Beatson threw two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit. Eric Taylor went two innings with Rob Hughes gave up one hit in the ninth inning and had one strikeout.
