SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's basketball team announced two signees for its 2019 class on Friday, with Zion Richardson and Morgan Safford both announcing their commitments to Wofford College.
A native of Plano, Texas, Richardson stands at six feet, four inches tall and plays both guard positions. Richardson attended Liberty High School, helping lead his team to the second round of states in each of the last three seasons and holds the scoring record for the school, totaling 1,750 points for his career. As a sophomore, Richardson stepped into the lineup and scored 15.0 points per game while being named the District 13-5A Defensive Player of the Year. In his junior season, Richardson scored 19.1 points per game while grabbing 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per contest, earning District MVP and all-region honors. As a senior, Richardson averaged 20 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, being named all-region, all-state and District MVP while setting the season record for points, assists, field goals made and free throws made.
The son of Michelle Devon, Richardson comes from an athletic family, with his cousin Brian Lloyd playing four years of collegiate basketball at Tulsa. In the classroom, Richardson is an honor roll student whose volunteer work includes the Jack and Jill program as well as working with the homeless. Â
Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Safford is a 6-4 guard that helped Bishop Harley High School to the 2018-19 District Championship. Competing in the Central Catholic League, Safford earned four varsity letters in men's basketball, totaling 1,214 points for his career. Scoring 634 points in 26 games in his senior season, Safford shot 49 percent from the field, connecting on 41 percent of his shots from beyond the arc while averaging 24.4 points and 2.3 assists per game. Safford's accolades include: Division II Player of the Year, District 10 Player of the Year, First Team All-State, First Team All-District, District 10 MVP and Dispatch News Player of the Week honors.
In addition to basketball, Safford competed on the varsity tennis team and is a Sacred Heart House Mentor Group Captain. The son of Toshia Safford, Morgan is a member of the Diversity Club and has volunteered with Holiday Help as well as the St. Stephens Community House for the past three years.
