Baseball Outscores USC Upstate 13-6

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the final midweek non-conference game of the season, the Wofford College baseball team defeated USC Upstate 13-6 at Harley Park on Wednesday night. The Spartans had a 2-0 lead after three innings and the Terriers tied the game with two runs in the fourth inning. Wofford scored three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 7-3 advantage and used four runs in the ninth to secure the win.
 
Wofford is 30-20 overall and USC Upstate is 22-23 on the season. Wofford both meetings between the teams this season. With the win, Wofford has reached 30 wins for the fifth time in the last six seasons. The Terriers had 17 hits in the game, including seven doubles which tied a school record. Lawson Hill, John Dempsey and Alec Cargin had three hits each, with Cargin driving in three runs. The Spartans were led by Robby McGaha with two hits and two runs scored.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the first inning. Lawson Hill led off the second inning with an infield single and he moved to second on a wild pitch, where he was stranded. The Spartans had a batter reach on an error with one out in the bottom of the second. A fielder's choice was followed by a single to give the Spartans runners on the corners. A wild pitch allowed a run to score for a 1-0 lead before a fly ball ended the second inning.
 
Mike Brown doubled with two outs in the top of the third inning but was unable to advance. With one out in the bottom of the third, a walk and hit-and-run single had runners on the corners for the Spartans. A sacrifice fly plated a run to make it 2-0 through three innings. Hudson Byorick reached on an error to begin the fourth inning and Lawson Hill followed with a single. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners and with two outs an intentional walk loaded the bases. A single to right field by Alec Cargin drove in two runs to tie the game.
 
The Spartans had a double to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. Back-to-back strikeouts were followed by back-to-back infield singles to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead. Mike Brown singled to open the fifth inning. With one out Hudson Byorick doubled and the Terriers had runners in scoring position and a single by Lawson Hill tied the game at 3-3. A single by John Dempsey, combined with an error, allowed two runs to score and Wofford had a 5-3 lead. The Spartans were retired in order to end the fifth inning.
 
With one out in the top of the sixth inning, Alec Cargin doubled and a double by Reed Massey made it a 6-3 game. A sacrifice fly by Mike Brown scored Massey for a 7-3 lead. Brett Rodriguez added a single but was stranded at third after a pair of stolen bases. With two out in the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans had a walk and single before a ground out ended the frame.
 
Lawson Hill led off the seventh inning with a walk and a single by John Dempsey gave Wofford runners on the corners. Hill scored on a wild pitch and with two outs a double by Alec Cargin scored Dempsey for a 9-3 advantage. The Spartans were retired in order to end the seventh inning. Hudson Byorick doubled with two outs in the top of the eighth inning and Lawson Hill walked. Byorick was caught stealing third to end the half.
 
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Spartans had a single and a walk with one out. After a strikeout, a fielding error allowed a run to score for a 9-4 margin. A walk loaded the bases before a ground out ended the inning. John Dempsey doubled to lead off the ninth inning and a bunt single by Matt Pagano gave Wofford runners on the corners. An RBI single by Andrew Orzel pushed the lead to 10-4 and a walk to Alec Cargin loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Reed Massey plated a run and a walk by Mike Brown loaded the bases again. A wild pitch made it 12-4 and a walk to Brett Rodriguez kept the bases loaded. Hudson Byorick added a sacrifice fly for a 13-4 advantage. The Spartans had a walk and a double to open the bottom of the ninth and cut the lead to 13-5. A ground out added a run before a fly ball and ground ball ended the game.
 
Matt Ellmyer started for Wofford and went three innings with two runs allowed on two hits. Cameron Bloodworth (2-2) had two strikeouts and one run allowed on three hits in an inning. Anthony Garcia worked a clean inning. Ty Reginelli gave up one hit in an inning with one strikeout. Jake Hershman earned the save by going the final three innings with three runs allowed on three hits.
 
USC Upstate starter Kyle Schmitt threw two innings with one hit allowed. Caleb Matthews went two innings with two runs allowed on three hits, along with one strikeout. Jonathan Carlyle (0-1) threw 1.2 innings with five runs allowed on seven hits. Grant Hoppock worked a third of an inning with two runs allowed on one hit. Jacob Thiessen went two innings with two hits allowed and a strikeout. Jonathan Howlett gave up four runs on three hits in a third of an inning. Austin Morgan went the final two-thirds without allowing a hit.
 
Wofford will host Furman for the final home Southern Conference series beginning on Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. the series will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
