SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Friday night, the Wofford College baseball team scored five runs in the eighth inning to earn an 8-2 win over Manhattan at Russell C. King Field. The Jaspers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning and the Terriers scored twice in the sixth inning for a 3-2 advantage. Wofford broke the game open in the eighth inning.
Wofford opens the season at 5-0, while Manhattan is 1-3 overall. The Terriers had ten hits in the game, including two each by
Hudson Byorick,
Lawson Hill and
Mike Brown. Hill and
Alec Cargin each had a pair of RBIs. The Jaspers had four hits, with two by Matt Padre and two by Jonathan Barditch.
After the Jaspers were retired in order in the top of the first inning,
Hudson Byorick doubled with one out in the bottom half but was stranded. In the second inning Manhattan went in order and Wofford left one runner on base after a walk and fielder's choice.
With one out in the top of the third, the Jaspers had a batter reach on an error and then a double put the runners in scoring position. A walk loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly gave Manhattan a 1-0 lead before a fielder's choice ended the top half.
Mike Brown led off the bottom of the third with an infield single and
Brett Rodriguez followed with a single through the left side. A bunt single by
Hudson Byorick loaded the bases and then a run scored when
John Dempsey grounded into a double play to tie the game at 1-1.
Manhattan had one out in the top of the fourth when a single was followed by two wild pitches to move the runner to third base. A ground out plated the run for a 2-1 lead and the Jaspers stranded one runner at the end of the top half. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the fourth inning. Manhattan had a batter reach on a walk in the top of the fifth, but was caught stealing second to end the half.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Mike Brown singled with one out and was caught stealing second base for the second out. A fly ball ended the fifth inning. The Jaspers had two batters walk in the top of the sixth but they were stranded in scoring position. Wofford led off the bottom of the sixth with
Hudson Byorick reaching on an error and
John Dempsey following with a single. A single by
Lawson Hill loaded the bases and a wild pitch advanced the runners and tied the game at 2-2. A ground out by
Alec Cargin plated a run to give Wofford a 3-2 lead.
The Jaspers left two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning and the Terriers were retired in order to end the frame. In the top of the eight, Manhattan led off with a hit by pitch and single. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners into scoring position, a strikeout and fly ball ended the opportunity.
Hudson Byorick and
John Dempsey walked to open the bottom of the eighth inning. They advanced on a wild pitch and a triple to right center by
Lawson Hill drove in both runners for a 5-2 lead.
Colin Davis added an RBI single and a single by
Alec Cargin gave the Terriers runners on the corners with a 6-2 advantage. A sacrifice bunt by
Shane Lussier plated a run and then
Alec Cargin scored on a passed ball for an 8-2 advantage. The Jaspers left two runners on base in the top of the ninth inning to end the game.
Wofford's
Josh Vitus made his first career start and went four innings with one earned run allowed on two hits, along with one strikeout.
Matt Ellmyer worked 1.1 innings without allowing a hit.
Dalton Rhadans (2-0) went 2.2 innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
Jake Dippold closed the game with one hit allowed in the ninth inning.
Nick Massa (0-2) started for Manhattan and in six innings allowed three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Jack Kelly did not allow a hit and had one strikeout in an inning. Jack Mahoney gave up three runs on two walks and a hit. Jose De La Cruz allowed two runs on two hits in the final inning.
Wofford will host a Saturday doubleheader at King Field against Brown beginning at 2:00 p.m. On Sunday, the Terriers will host Monmouth at 2:30 p.m. to close out the weekend.
