Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Brown

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team split a doubleheader with Brown University on Saturday at Russell C. King Field. The Bears won the first game 3-2, scoring the winning run in the sixth inning of the seven inning contest. In the second game, Wofford scored three runs in the first inning and five runs in the third inning on the way to a 12-3 victory.
 
Wofford opens the season at 6-1, while Brown is 1-2 overall. The Terriers had seven hits in the first game, led by Lawson Hill with two. Wofford had 11 hits in the second game, which included three hits by Colin Davis. Alec Cargin had two hits and five RBIs in the second contest. The Bears had nine hits in the first game and seven in the second.
 
In the first game, the Bears had one out when a single was followed by a double to take a 1-0 lead. John Dempsey singled with two outs in the bottom of the first inning but was unable to advance. A double by Brown began the second inning and the runner moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, but two strikeouts ended the scoring chance. Both teams had one hit in the second inning. With one out in the top of the third, the Bears had a single but the runner was picked off. Matty Brown led off the bottom of the third with a single, but was picked off. Mike Brown walked and Hudson Byorick reached on an error, but a fly ball ended the inning.
 
The Bears had a bunt single in the top of the fourth, but was stranded. Lawson Hill led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and he moved to third on a bunt single by Colin Davis. A sacrifice bunt by Alec Cargin scored Hill to tie the game at 1-1. With one out in the top of the fifth inning, the Bears had back-to-back doubles to regain the lead at 2-1. In the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Hudson Byorick doubled and John Dempsey was intentionally walked. A single up the middle by Lawson Hill scored Byorick to tie the game at 2-2 before a fly ball ended the inning.
 
In the top of the sixth, the Bears had a single with two outs. A double in the right corner drove in a run and Brown had a 3-2 advantage. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the sixth after Matty Brown was hit by a pitch. The Bears were retired in order in the top of the seventh. With two outs, John Dempsey walked for the Terriers and Shane Lussier came in to pinch run. A fielder's choice ended the game.
 
Wofford starter Hayes Heinecke (1-1) threw a complete seven inning game. He allowed three runs on nine hits and walked only one batter with a career-high eleven strikeouts.
 
Collin Garner (1-0) started for Brown and went five innings with two runs allowed on seven hits, along with three strikeouts. Pat Petteruti earned the save by going the final two innings without allowing a hit and striking out one batter.
 
The second game saw the Browns leave one runner on base in the top of the first inning. Wofford had the bases loaded in the bottom of the first after three walks. A double off the wall in right by Alec Cargin with two outs cleared the bases for a 3-0 lead. After two strikeouts in the top of the second inning, a walk was followed by a home run by Jacob Burley to make it a 3-2 game. The Terriers were retired in order in the bottom of the second.
 
The Bears left two runners on base in the top of the third. John Dempsey was hit by a pitch and Lawson Hill singled with one out in the bottom half of the third. A single by Colin Davis loaded the bases and then a single by Alec Cargin drove in two runs and on a throw a third run scored for a 6-2 lead. A single by Andrew Orzel drove in Cargin to make it 7-2, with a single by Mike Brown scoring Orzel to push the lead to 8-2.
 
Brown had one runner left on base in the top of the fourth after a lead-off walk. John Dempsey was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Colin Davis hit a no-doubt home run to left field for a 10-2 advantage.
 
In the top of the fifth inning the Bears stranded runners on the corners. Wofford had a lead-off walk by Andrew Orzel and a double by Mike Brown with one out, but both were stranded in scoring position. O'Kelly McWilliams struck out the side in the top of the sixth inning. The Terriers left one on base in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Bears stranded one in the top of the seventh.
 
Wofford led off the bottom of the seventh with a single by Andrew Orzel. With one out Mike Brown walked and then a double by Ryan Galanie drove in both runs for a 12-2 lead. The Bears stranded a pair of runners in the top of the eighth after a single and a walk. In the bottom of the eighth, Colin Davis doubled but was unable to advance. Brown led off the ninth with a walk and had the bases loaded with one out after a single and walk. A wild pitch allowed a run to cross the plate for the 12-3 final score.
 
Ethan Imbimbo made his first career start for the Terriers and went two innings with two runs allowed on two hits, along with two strikeouts. O'Kelly McWilliams (1-0) threw 5.0 scoreless innings with three hits allowed and nine strikeouts. Jake Dippold worked an inning with one hit allowed and a strikeout. David Yourke allowed one run on one hit and a strikeout in the ninth inning.
 
Brown starter Bobby Olsen (0-1) threw 2.1 innings with six runs allowed on three hits and four walks. John Torroella worked 3.2 innings and gave up four runs on six hits, while striking out four. Ryan Fisch went the final two innings with two runs allowed on three hits and a pair of strikeouts.
 
Wofford will host Monmouth at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday to close out the weekend.
