Women’s Soccer Announces Signing Class

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College women's soccer coach Emily Grant has announced that thirteen student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent or letters of commitment to join the Terriers in the fall of 2020.

"We are excited about this group joining us in the fall," said Grant. "With this being our first full recruiting class, we wanted to ensure that the additions were not only going to push the level athletically, but were also going to fit seamlessly into the outstanding team culture that we already have. I truly think we have done that with each and every kid in this 2020 recruiting class. After a full year of involvement putting this class together, we are extremely excited for them to get here and for their immediate impact on and off the field."

The group includes three forwards, five midfielders, two defenders, and two goalkeepers. Five different states are represented in the class.

Coach Grant on Mia: "We identified Mia very early in the process as a feisty, creative and super athletic forward. However, she has spent a lot of time as an outside back in the past year and has performed extraordinarily well. No matter the position, Mia's athleticism will allow her to make an immediate impact. We are looking forward to seeing where she is the most effective for us in the fall."

Coach Grant on Caroline: "Caroline has a tremendous upside. She is a great athlete with a drive that is rare. With quality and consistent goalkeeper training, we think that Caroline will progress extremely quickly and push the standard of our goalkeeping core."

Candler Fontaine

Coach Grant on Candler: "Candler has all the attributes needed to score goals for us. Her ability to strike a ball, willingness to take people on and her ability to play back to goal will all aid our attack over the next four years. Her positive and bubbly attitude on and off the field will also add to our team culture."

Leanna Guion

Coach Grant on Leanna: "Leanna is a technical, creative attacking player. She has the natural ability to strike the ball and her brain for the game is exciting. She comes from a soccer family and is very much a soccer-first kid. We are looking forward to her impact over the course of her four years at Wofford."

She will push our goalkeeping group every day because that's the type of kid that she is. Sophie has the potential to be a starting goalkeeper for us in the very near future."

Coach Grant on Kate: "Kate is a local player that we identified at one of our ID camps. What she lacks in height, she makes up for in heart, technical ability and soccer smarts. Kate never loses the ball. She always makes good decisions and when she has the opportunity to strike a ball, she can score. Kate will always have an impact because of the way she thinks the game and the way she can distribute the ball."

Meara Kelly

Coach Grant on Meara: "Meara is a quiet kid by nature but has the ability to break teams down with her vision and technical ability. We think that when she is pushed every day in a highly competitive training environment, she will rise to the occasion and thrive. Meara's ceiling is very high and we are looking forward to seeing her trajectory as a player."

• She had 10 goals and seven assists in 2018, while earning second team All-Conference honors in 2017 with six goals and five assists
Coach Grant on Alexis: "Lu is absolutely a blue collar player that would run through a brick wall if you asked her to. As a left back she has laid down some tackles that you usually only see at the professional level. She has a killer left foot and loves to join the attack when she can. Lu will fit our system very well and bring a grit to our team that we haven't had in the past."

Addie Marlett

• She earned three letters at Boone High School and was team captain as a junior and senior
• During her junior season the team was 14-5 overall and reached the Sweet Sixteen in the state playoffs
• Earned Midfielder of the Year honors in 2018
Coach Grant on Addie: "Addie does everything that you want a holding midfielder to do – she plays simple, doesn't lose the ball and is good in the air. Her ability to hit a set piece will prove very valuable for us. Addie's athleticism and technical ability makes her very versatile and we can see her playing multiple positions for us over the course of her four years."

Coach Grant on Haley: "Haley is an all-around fantastic player. I've seen her play outside back, attacking midfield and forward and she plays them all extremely well. Haley has a maturity to her game that will allow her to come in and make an immediate impact at many different positions. We are very excited about Haley and look forward to seeing where she thrives for us."

Mary Jane Meyer
Defender| 5'4"
Savannah, GA | Savannah Christian Preparatory School | Jacksonville Armada ECNL/Savannah United
• Team captain as a senior
• Plays club soccer with Armada WFC ECNL in Jacksonville and was in the Georgia ODP camp
• She was a state qualifier in both cross country and track
Coach Grant on MJ: "MJ is one of the most committed players I've had the opportunity to coach. You can see that in her commitment to drive 2 hours to training in Jacksonville in order to play on the ECNL team there. In the past year, she has already grown tremendously in her ability to attack from the outside back position which is a big part of what we ask from our backs. She is extremely coachable and that, coupled with her athleticism, makes us very excited to see her impact."

Kaley O'Donnell
Forward | 5'4"
Maitland, FL | Lake Highland Prep | Florida Krush ECNL
• As a freshman she led the team in assists and was second on the team in goals scored
• Received invites for the Adidas Regional Select and ODP
• Her father played football at Troy University
Coach Grant on Kaley: "It is rare to find a player that exudes natural leadership qualities- Kaley does that. Kaley has overcome a lot of adversity in her life already and has a mental strength that is unparalleled. Her work rate, creativity and willingness to demand more from her teammates will help our culture immediately. Beyond that, Kaley is a great player. Her hunger to score goals will ask questions of our opponents in a way that we didn't last year."

Maddie Poole
Defender | 6'0"
Lexington, SC | River Bluff HS | SC United ECNL
• A four-year starter at River Bluff High School, earning All-Region honors twice
• In 2019 her HS team won the region title and was a lower state finalist
• Earned All-Lexington County honors and was a nominee for region player of the year
• Plays club soccer for South Carolina United ECNL and her team qualified for the 2018 nationals
Coach Grant on Maddie: "Maddie's height is an obvious strength but her technical ability while being 6 foot is extremely impressive. Though Maddie has spent the majority of her club career playing holding center midfield, we think that she will be a great center back for us. Her technical ability from playing in the midfield will make her conversion to playing center back easy. We love her ability to play out of the back with composure on the ball as well as her ability to communicate and keep things organized. Losing a staple center back is never easy but Maddie has the propensity to make that turnover much easier."

The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to Wofford College and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
