SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team used a strong offensive performance in a 23-5 win over Presbyterian College on Wednesday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored twice in the first inning and went on to score in all but one inning as they scored 23 runs on 22 hits. The Blue Hose were kept off the scoreboard until the seventh inning.
Wofford is now 10-3 on the season, while Presbyterian is 2-10 overall. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Clinton, however it was moved to Spartanburg due to field conditions. The Terriers were led by
Mike Brown with a 5-of-6 performance from the plate that included a home run and five RBIs.
Lawson Hill added three hits as 14 different players had hits in the contest. The Blue Hose had eight hits, including a pair of home runs by Tannor Byrd.
The Blue Hose had one out and runners on the corners in the top of the first inning, but the Terriers turned a double play to end the scoring chance. Wofford led off with singles by
Mike Brown and
Brett Rodriguez who advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. A single down the right line by
Lawson Hill scored both runners for a 2-0 lead. Presbyterian was retired in order in the top of the second inning.
Mike Brown singled in the bottom of the second and the Blue Hose had a single with two outs in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third
Hudson Byorick walked with one out.
Lawson Hill singled and both runners advanced on a fielding error. Singles by
John Dempsey and
Colin Davis, along with a throwing error and a wild pitch plated four runs in the inning for a 6-0 advantage.
The Blue Hose had a runner reach on an error in the top of the fourth, which was followed by a double. A strikeout ended the top half.
Mike Brown singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth. He stole second and moved to third on a fly ball, while scoring on a wild pitch for a 7-0 lead.
Hudson Byorick doubled and
Lawson Hill walked, with the runners advancing on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by
John Dempsey pushed the score to 8-0. The Blue Hose went in order in the top of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Alec Cargin and
Matty Brown walked and advanced on a wild pitch. A single through the left side by
Mike Brown scored both runners for a 10-0 lead.
Hudson Byorick walked and with two outs a single by
Lawson Hill drove in
Mike Brown to make it 11-0.
John Dempsey walked to load the bases and a wild pitch plated a run for a 12-0 lead at the end of five innings.
Presbyterian had one batter reach base in the top of the sixth inning on an error.
Alec Cargin led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to left field. It was his second homer of the season and gave the Terriers a 13-0 advantage.
Andrew Orzel followed with a single before a double play was turned by the Blue Hose. After a walk, a ground out ended the inning. In the top of the seventh, Tannor Byrd led off with a solo home run for a 13-1 score.
The bottom of the seventh began with a walk to
Hudson Byorick and a single by
Trey Yunger.
John Dempsey singled to load the bases and a single by
Cameron Gill drove in a run. A single by
Brennen Dorighi plated two more runs.
Mike Brown then hit his first career home run over the fence in left field to make it a 19-1 lead for the Terriers. The Blue Hose answered in the top of the eighth with a three run homer by Tannor Byrd to cut the advantage to 19-4. A solo home run made it 19-5 and the Blue Hose left two runners on base to end the top of the eighth.
Wofford loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with one out on two hits and a walk. After a strikeout,
Brennen Dorighi crushed a ball out to right center for a grand slam home run. Wofford had a 23-5 lead at the end of the frame. The Blue Hose loaded the bases in the top of the ninth on a double, walk and hit by pitch with two outs. A foul out ended the game.
Wofford starter
Jake Hershman (2-1) went four scoreless innings with three hits allowed and five strikeouts.
O'Kelly McWilliams threw two innings without allowing a hit and striking out five batters.
Ethan Imbimbo gave up one run on one hit in an inning with one strikeout.
David Yourke allowed four runs on three hits in a third of an inning.
Matt Ellmyer had two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning.

Kyle Benson (0-2) started for Presbyterian and went two innings with two runs allowed on four hits. Clark Dearman worked an inning with four runs allowed on three hits. Luke Matthews threw an inning with two runs allowed on two hits. Grayson Stoneking allowed four runs on two hits in an inning on the mound. Alex Flood gave up one run on two hits in an inning. Graham Mitchell allowed six runs on five hits in an inning. William Farrar went an inning with four runs allowed on four hits.
Wofford will begin a three-game weekend series against LaSalle on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
