SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team completed spring practice with the Black and Gold game on Saturday morning. With the offense versus defense format in the scrimmage, the offense won 48-30.
The offense had touchdowns by
Ryan Lovelace,
KeiAndre Sanders,
Jacquez Allen and
Jamari Broussard. The defense had an interception returned for a touchdown by
Cagan Campbell and a fumble recovered by
James Wells.
"It was a good spring," said Coach
Josh Conklin. "I was disappointed that
Jimmy Weirick was unable to take any reps today, but I am glad Peyton was able to handle things. I think we had a really good spring from a fundamental and technique standpoint as we learned some new schemes. We have a way to go in the situational stuff and you could see that today. I am proud of our effort and our energy. I liked the format of today's game and I think we will do it again. This was the first time we did it so I don't think they completely understood the scoring but as it went on they picked it up. It makes it competitive as you go offense against defense."
The morning began with a series of third down plays before the start of the scrimmage. On the first series, the offense had a pair of first downs before
Ryan Lovelace scored on a 30-yard touchdown run. The next series saw
Garrison Moore make a 20-yard catch and
KeiAndre Sanders catch a 40-yard pass, but the series ended with a 32-yard field goal by
Coltin Hallman.
The offense then had a drive that included five first downs and was capped with a three-yard catch by
D'mauriae VanCleave for the touchdown. On the next series, the defense picked up points on a three-and-out and then
Cagan Campbell intercepted a pass and returned it 45-yards for a touchdown. The offense responded with a 40-yard touchdown reception by
Jacquez Allen. The defense answered with a fumble forced by
Zy Abercrombie and
James Wells recovered the fumble.
Rett Russell ended the next drive with a sack.
The team then ran a four-minute segment with the offense gaining one first down before being stopped on third down. In the two-minute drill, a 20-yard run by
Jacquez Allen was followed by a short touchdown run by
Jamari Broussard.
The Southern Conference officiating crew called five penalties, which included three false starts on the offense. During the scrimmage, TE
