LEXINGTON, Va. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2021 Southern Conference Championships on Saturday morning at the Lexington Golf and Country Club in Lexington, Virginia. The women were sixth overall and the men were ninth.
The women's 5K race was held first and
Alexus Atkins was 22
nd overall to lead the Terriers with a time of 19:30.3.
Mary Claire Ridgeway was 28
th at 19:59.6, followed by
Carolyne Shealy at 32
nd in 20:09.5.
Katharine Spence was 44
th in 20:57.8 and
Morgan Roberts was 57
th in 21:23.4 to round out the scorers.
Ava Fowler (21:43.0) and
Chloe Gilbert (21:55.5) also finished for the Terriers.
Following the race,
Mary Claire Ridgeway and
Carolyne Shealy were named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team. They are the fifth and sixth runners, respectively, to earn the honor in school history and the first since Hannah Steelman in 2017.
The men's 8K race was held first and
Beck Classey finished 15
th overall with a time of 26:13.17. It marked just the third time a Terrier finished in the top 20 in the individual results.
Josh Hendry was 48
th in 28:02.6, followed by
Carson Archie (28:22.6),
Jack Moody (28:57.1) and
Ryan O'Malley (29:46.6) to score for the team.
Demir Degirmenci (30:08.0) and
Patrick Daly (30:33.9) also competed.
Overall Furman was first in both the men's (15) and women's (18) races for the ninth straight season. They were followed in the men's race by East Tennessee State (64), Mercer (122), Samford (128), UNCG (136), Western Carolina (156), VMI (175), Chattanooga (200), Wofford (241) and The Citadel (267). In the women's race, Samford (83), East Tennessee State (86), UNCG (90), Wofford (170), Western Carolina (176), VMI (226), Mercer (255) and The Citadel (269) completed the field.
