Wofford finishes fourth to open spring competition

Earl recorded her first top-10 finish of the year on Tuesday.
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -  The Wofford women's golf team enjoyed a solid start to the 2021 spring campaign on Tuesday afternoon, seeing top-15 finishes from juniors Becca Earl and Kristine Torralba to pace Wofford to a fourth-place finish at the Amelia Island Collegiate, hosted by Jacksonville University, in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

Wofford finished with a team score of 930 for the tournament, as Seminole State College earned the crown with an 884 team score, followed by Jacksonville State (899) and Eastern Kentucky (920).

The first two rounds were played on Monday, Feb. 15, as the latter portion of the second round was postponed until the next day due to storms in the area. Tuesday's slate of competition completed the second round from where things left off, prior to the conclusion of the tournament's third round.

Earl finished eighth individually, nabbing her first top-10 finish of the year to lead the Terriers with a 9-over-par 225 for the tournament. Earl remained within the top 10 throughout the weekend, as she was tied for second with an even-par 72 after round one. A rough finish on the back-nine in the second round kept her tied for 10th before finishing 2-over-par in the third round (74) to earn the top-10 finish.

Similar to Earl, Torralba was tied for sixth after the first round, notching four birdies down the stretch to post a 1-over-par 73. After finishing 9-over-par in the second round, Torralba rebounded in the third, posting a 3-over-par 75 to finish T-14th with an overall score of 229.

Sophomore Nicole Amos finished 26th with a total score of 236, posting a 2-over-par 74 in the third round to place her seven spots above her second round finish at T-33rd.

Senior Lina Settelmayer steadily climbed the leaderboard, finishing 31st with a total score of 240, as juniors Emma King (249) and Speedy Kent (252) round out the Terriers that competed.

Next, Wofford prepares for the Kiawah Spring Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston, in Kiawah Island, S.C., as the tournament is scheduled for Sunday, February 28-29.
