Box Score BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team opened the season on Friday night with a 5-4 loss to Gardner-Webb at John Henry Moss Stadium. The Runnin' Bulldogs were up 5-2 before the Terriers scored twice in the seventh inning. Wofford left two runners on base in the ninth inning.
Wofford is 0-1 to begin the season and Gardner-Webb is 1-0.
Lawson Hill led the Terriers with four of the team's six hits, while
Hayes Heinecke struck out nine batters. The Runnin' Bulldogs had six hits, including two home runs.
With one out in the top of the first,
Lawson Hill had a single for the team's first hit of the season but was unable to advance. Gardner-Webb had a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the second inning and Gardner-Webb stranded a runner on third to end the frame.
Matty Brown walked with one out in the top of the third, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by
Trey Yunger to tie the game at 1-1. Yunger stole second and scored on a single through the left side by
Lawson Hill for a 2-1 lead. A two-run homer by the Runnin' Bulldogs with two outs in the bottom of the third gave them a 3-2 advantage.
After Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the fourth inning,
Hayes Heinecke struck out the side to end the inning.
Lawson Hill doubled with two outs in the top of the fifth but was left on third base after advancing on a wild pitch. Heinecke struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Wofford stranded one runner on base. The Runnin' Bulldogs had two runners in scoring position when a triple drove in both for a 5-2 advantage.
Brennen Dorighi led off the top of the seventh with a single up the middle and
Matty Brown walked. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position.
Lawson Hill drove in a run and Brown scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 5-4. Two runners were left on base at the seventh inning stretch after walks. Gardner-Webb stranded one runner in the bottom of the seventh.
Both teams were retired in order in the eighth inning. With one out in the top of the ninth,
Trey Yunger was hit by a pitch and
Lawson Hill singled. A strikeout and fielder's choice ended the game.
Wofford's
Hayes Heinecke (0-1) went 5.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.
Dalton Rhadans threw the final 2.2 innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
Mason Miller (1-0) started for Gardner-Webb and allowed two runs on four hits, along with 11 strikeouts and two walks. Kyle Ruehlman gave up two runs on three walks and a hit. Kyle Skidmore worked 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. Landon Wilson earned the save with one hit allowed and two strikeouts in the ninth.
Wofford will return to Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. before the home opener at Russell C. King Field at 3:00 p.m. Sunday against the Runnin' Bulldogs.
