Wofford Excels At SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – It was another outstanding performance for the Wofford track and field program at the 2021 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The women finished second for the second straight season and four individual titles were earned.
 
The Southern Conference titles were won by Megan Dunn in the heptathlon, the women's 4x100 relay and Kerrington Johnson in the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles.
 
The women's team scored 120.5 points to take second place. It marked the second highest point total in school history. The men's squad was sixth overall with 83 points, with the point total the also the second highest in school history.  
 
Southern Conference titles were won by Megan Dunn in the heptathlon, the women's 4x100 relay and Kerrington Johnson won the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles.
 
Overall, fifteen All-Southern Conference honors were achieved by Jenna Reid (javelin), Megan Dunn (heptathlon), Netanya Linares (heptathlon), women's 4x100 relay, men's 4x100 relay, Kerrington Johnson (100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles), Destiny Shippy (100-meter hurdles and 200 meters), Isaiah Ellis (110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles), Jasmine Jefferson (400 meters), Conor Murphy (400 meters), Tanner Henry (decathlon), and Elijah Bull (400-meter hurdles).
 
In addition, a total of sixteen All-Freshman honors were awarded to Terriers which are the most in school history. Wofford set or tied eleven school records in the meet.
 
"It was a great weekend for our team," said head coach Johnny Bomar. "I am so proud of our whole team. We came into the meet with one of the smallest rosters and had a few athletes who didn't participate due to injury. We outperformed the expectations. Everyone filled in where they could and stepped up to come through for a great team finish."
 
With the final three events of the heptathlon on Sunday morning, Megan Dunn picked up wins in the javelin and 800 meters on the way to the title. Her 5,013 points set a new school record. Netanya Linares was first in the long jump as she was third in the overall standings with 4,493 points. This was the third SoCon title for Dunn, as she also won the indoor pentathlon in 2020 and 2021.
 
To complete the final five events of the decathlon, Tanner Henry finished second overall with 6,466 points and Sebastian LaTorre was fifth at 5,974 points. Henry was first in the javelin and second in the 110-meter hurdles, while LaTorre was second in the discus and javelin and tied for first in the pole vault with a school record of 4.40 meters..
 
The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Destiny Shippy, Kerrington Johnson, Rylee Jorgensen and Madeline McNinch won the event in a time of 46.27. They are the first relay team to win a conference title in either indoor or outdoor track in school history. The men's 4x100 team of Jaylen Muhammad, Sam Larkin, Isaiah Ellis and Sam Kamara set a new school record time of 41.21 to place second.
 
In the 100-meter hurdles, Kerrington Johnson took first place in a school record time of 13.27. Destiny Shippy was third (13.74) and Netanya Linares took fourth (14.31) in the event as well. Isaiah Ellis was third in the 110-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 14.05. In the 400 meters, Jasmine Jefferson was third (55.92) and Dahlia Cutler was sixth (57.20) for the women. Conor Murphy was second in the 400 meters for the men at 47.95 to set a new school record, while Elijah Bull was fourth (48.33) and Sam Larkin was sixth (48.80).
 
For the women in the 100 meters, Destiny Shippy was fifth in 12.02 and Madeline McNinch took sixth in 12.04. Jaylen Muhammad added a fourth place in the men's 100 meters at 10.72. Kerrington Johnson set a new school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.42 to win her second title of the day and third title of her career. Lily Meetze added a seventh-place finish in 1:08.77. In the men's 400-meter hurdles, Isaiah Ellis was second in 53.24 and Elijah Bull was third at 53.57.
 
Moving on to the 200 meters, Destiny Shippy was third overall in 24.25 for the women. In the men's race, Jaylen Muhammad was fourth in 21.51, Conor Murphy fifth (22.02) and Sam Larkin sixth (22.06) to pick up twelve points in the event. In the final track events of the meet, the women's 4x400 relay was fifth in 3:52.14. The men's 4x400 relay team was second, however were disqualified.
 
In field events on Sunday, Tanner Henry was seventh in the men's high jump at 1.95 meters. Christopher Sheppard was sixth in the triple jump at 13.51 meters. Rylee Jorgensen added a seventh-place finish in the women's triple jump at 11.28 meters. Kelly Hogan was fourth in the shot put in a school-record distance of 12.76 meters.
 
Samford won both the men's and women's titles. They had 204.5 points on the men's side and 229.5 points for the women.
