Colin Davis was named Player of the Year, starting pitcher
Elliot Carney was named Pitcher of the Year and
Todd Interdonato was named Coach of the Year in the Southern Conference postseason honors as announced by the league on Tuesday. It is the first time in school history a Terrier has won those three awards.
In addition to the three major honors, All-Southern Conference first team honors went to outfielder
Colin Davis, starting pitcher
Elliot Carney, relief pitcher
Dalton Rhadans and third baseman
Jack Renwick. Second team recognition went to outfielder
Nolen Hester and catcher
Lawson Hill, while
Jack Renwick and
Trey Yunger were named to the All-Freshman team.
The Terriers finished the 2021 season with a 35-19 overall record and a 21-9 mark in league play. They earned the Southern Conference regular season title for the first time in school history and will be the #1 seed in the Southern Conference Tournament which will begin on Thursday, May 27 at Fluor Field in Greenville.
Carney, a senior from Sammamish, Washington, is the first Terrier to earn Pitcher of the Year honors. He was 6-3 on the season and led the Southern Conference in ERA (2.71), strikeouts (101) and opponent batting average (.186). His six wins and 83.0 innings pitched lead the team. He has walked only 20 batters this season. Carney has been a part of five shutout wins this season, including a complete game no-hitter.
Davis, a senior from Roswell, Georgia, is the first Terrier to earn Player of the Year honors. He has started 47 games in centerfield this season and leads the team in home runs. In the Southern Conference, he is ranked is eighth in batting average (.359), third in slugging percentage (.636), ninth in on base percentage (.435), second in doubles (16), third in total bases (117), fourth in stolen bases (18) and eighth in hits (66). He was named All-Southern Conference second team in 2019 and All-Freshman in 2018.
Hester, a junior from Rockwall, Texas, has made 49 starts in the outfield this season, primarily at right field. He leads the team in batting average and hits. Among the league leaders he is seventh in batting average (.363), fifth in hits (69), seventh in runs scored (49), and fifth in on base percentage (.470). This is his first All-SoCon honor.
Hill, a senior from Canton, Georgia, has started all 54 games this season with 33 starts at catcher and 21 as the designated hitter. He is batting .311 on the season with 64 hits, 41 RBIs and 39 runs scored. He is 43rd in the nation in walks received and the 57th toughest player to strikeout. He was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in 2018.
Renwick, a freshman from Spartanburg, South Carolina, has started 51 games with 38 starts at third base. He is batting .293 on the season with 55 hits, 40 runs scored and 27 RBIs. He leads the Southern Conference in stolen bases with 28, which also ranks sixth in the nation. In addition, he is ninth in the league in doubles (14) and first in sacrifice bunts (10).
Rhadans, a junior from Acworth, Georgia, had made 22 relief appearances this season. He has a 5-0 record and has seven saves. In 54.2 innings pitched he has recorded 58 strikeouts with 19 walks. Among Southern Conference pitchers, he is second in ERA (2.80), second in saves (7) and third in opposing batting average (.227).
Yunger, a sophomore from Atlanta, Geogia, earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. He is third on the team with a .330 batting average and second with 67 hits. He is tied for the team lead in RBIs with 43 and has scored 45 runs. He is third in the SoCon with 19 stolen bases and seventh in hits.
Todd Interdonato is in his 14
th season as head coach and this is the first Coach of the Year honor in his career. In 2021, the team won nine of the ten SoCon series played to win the regular season championship for the first time in school history. The 21 wins are the most in school history, while the .700 winning percentage is also best in program history. He has built the program into one of the most consistent in the league, with a .500 or better record in each of the last six seasons – the only team in the SoCon to do so.
The Terriers have had multiple players named All-Southern Conference for the sixth straight season. The total of six players earning All-Southern Conference honors matches the most in school history with the 2019 season. The four players named to the first team are the most ever and prior to this season there have only been seven players totaled honored on the first team. Only four freshmen have been named All-SoCon at Wofford, with
Jack Renwick the first to be named to the first team.
Wofford had a league-best four first-team selections each on the coaches' and media teams for 13 total honors between all teams. On both the coaches' and media squads, Western Carolina earned three first-team selections while Mercer had two. ETSU, UNCG and VMI earned one first-team selection apiece from both organizations.
