SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College junior Hayes Heinecke was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 13th round of the 2021 MLB Draft with the 391st overall selection.

"First of all, it has been a privilege to play baseball at Wofford College," said Heinecke. "Over the past three years as a Terrier I have made some of the best memories of my life. I could not be more excited about this next chapter of my career with the Cardinals."

Heinecke, a junior from Fayettteville, Georgia, started eight games in 2021 with a 2-4 record and a 4.40 ERA. In 43.0 innings he had 43 strikeouts, which were the third-most on the team. The SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year, he missed the final month of the season due to injury.

"We are thrilled for Hayes to be selected by the Cardinals!" said Wofford head coach Todd Interdonato. "It was clear from his freshman year he was blossoming into a professional during his time here. The amount of dedication Hayes put into his development at Wofford is second to none. Seth, Matt, and Sam played a major part in him becoming the player he is today. The Cardinals are getting are getting one of the most successful and consistent starting pitchers in college baseball over the past three years. We can't wait to see his success in their organization."

For his career, Heinecke played in 28 games with 27 starts. He posted a 15-7 record with a 2.98 ERA. In 157.0 innings, he recorded 163 strikeouts. In 2019, he was the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, All-Southern Conference second team and a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.

"Hayes has worked extremely hard and thrown a great deal of competitive innings during his time at Wofford College," said pitching coach Seth Cutler-Voltz. "He has continued to push the bar for the standard of the pitchers in this program. We are all excited for Hayes to begin his professional career with the Cardinals."

Heinecke joins teammate Colin Davis (seventh round, Mariners) as 2021 MLB Draft choices. It is only the third time in school history that Wofford has had two players selected in the same year, joining Luke Leftwich and Will Stillman in 2015 and Matthew Milburn and Will Stillman in 2016.

Heinecke is the eleventh Terrier drafted in the last fifteen years. Brandon Waring was selected in the 7th round in 2007 while Michael Gilmartin (27th), John Cornely (15th), Alex Wilson (15th), J.D.
