CARY, N.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team took part in the ITA Carolina Regional Championship hosted by Duke University at the Cary Tennis Park from Friday to Sunday. Over 120 competitors from 23 schools in North and South Carolina were in action during the tournament.
Singles play began on Friday and doubles action opened on Saturday morning. Highlights for the Terriers included a main draw win by
Mark Endler, while in the consolation round
Ashe Ray reached the Round of 16 and
Will Fullett advanced to the quarterfinals.
The team played through adversity during the weekend. Following his opening match win on Friday morning,
Mark Endler was playing his second match and was tied at 1-1 when he collapsed on the court. The Duke University coaching staff and athletic trainers provided immediate care for him until EMS arrived. Endler will remain at Duke University for several more days before returning to campus.
"This tournament has been life-altering for our team," said head coach
Rod Ray. "Mark is our hero and he has been in our thoughts every moment since Friday's cardiac arrest. We're thrilled with his prognosis and recovery. I'm appreciative of the many kind people who have supported Mark and the team. Duke's athletic trainer, along with so many others who jumped in to help, were amazing. There is no doubt that Mark was in the right place at the right time.
"I couldn't be prouder of our team," continued Ray. "We've been through a lot. The maturity and love that our team has demonstrated is incredible."
Wofford will finish the fall season at the Southern Conference singles matches, held in Belton, S.C. from November 4-6.
