Women’s Basketball Wins Record Seventh-Straight Game

Terriers down Emory & Henry behind stout defense

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team concluded its four-game homestand in fashion inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium Monday night, securing a 76-54 triumph over Emory & Henry behind 20 turnovers. Three Terriers scored in double figures en route to Wofford's seventh-straight win, lifting the Terriers to 7-2 on the campaign. E&H remains 3-4 as the contest was an exhibition for the Wasps.

The seventh-straight win is the most for Wofford in its Division I era. The 7-2 start is Wofford's best at the Division I level and best overall through nine games since the 1992-93 season in which the Terriers opened 8-1.

"It's really special, seven in a row," said head coach Jimmy Garrity. "Some of those have been on the road against some good, tough teams. A lot of 50-50 games, so tonight was a night we needed to come out here and play the way we needed to play – score it, good defense. That's a good team, Emory & Henry. They played well. So I'm glad we did everything we needed to do to come out with a win, our seventh victory in a row."

"I feel amazing. I know the team feels amazing," said Jackie Carman of the record-setting win streak. "It's always great to make some history here at Wofford."

The Terriers shot with authority in the contest, downing 40.8 percent (29-of-71) while shooting 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from three. That mark is Wofford's second-best three-point shooting effort of the season overall and best when making at least 10 treys. Though the Wasps shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53), they could not get going from three as Wofford held them to 24.0 percent (6-of-25).

The Wofford defense was stifling, forcing 20 E&H turnovers, which the Terriers converted into 21 extra points. While rebounds were even at 35 for each squad, Wofford secured 13 offensive boards for 20 second chance points while holding the Wasps to eight offensive rebounds and only eight second chance points. Wofford's 17 assists were a season high, and the Terriers protected the ball well with only nine turnovers.

"We had them at 20 [turnovers]," said Garrity of the defensive efforts. "But I'm even more impressed with how we shared the ball. Our assist-to-turnover ratio was really high."

"Forcing turnovers is definitely something that we're focusing on this season," added Lilly Hatton. "We want to take care of the ball ourselves and put a lot of pressure on our opponents and make them turn the ball over and score off of those turnovers. So anytime we can get the turnover count for the other team close to 20 is great. I'm really proud of the effort our guards put on the ball."

The Terriers tallied another balanced scoring effort behind three players in double-digits. Lilly Hatton led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She was on fire from distance, knocking down five threes, a new career high. She added four boards and Wofford's lone block in the contest.

"I feel good," said Hatton of her performance. "It's always good to get a team win. We were well-coached this game, and our players came ready to play. And so a great performance by our team."

Jackie Carman tallied 14 points for her 10th-straight outing in double-digits dating back to last season. She added four rebounds and an assist. Helen Matthews netted 11 points with six rebounds and three assists. She swiped three steals in the contest to match her career best.

Rachael Rose totaled eight points and led the team with seven boards. She dished four assists to tie for the team lead. Freshman Sophie Smith put home her first-career field goals, both of which were threes, for a new career-high six points. She added a steal, rebound and assist.

Abbey Crawford also tallied six points, and she pulled down two boards. Ja'Rae Smith and Jessie Parish each notched three points and two rebounds. Smith dished four assists to match her career high, and Parish contributed one of her own.

Indiya Clarke added two points to round out Wofford's scorers. She secured five boards as well. Sydnee Richetto made her first-career start, and though held scoreless she added two rebounds and two assists alongside swiping a pair of steals.

Wofford won the opening tip and after a little over a minute of scoreless ball, the Terriers got on the board first at the 8:14 mark when Jackie Carman drained a triple followed by a fast break bucket. Emory & Henry kept things slightly close at first, but Lilly Hatton popped a trey followed by an Abbey Crawford jumper for an eight-point lead (14-6) at the halfway point of the quarter. A seven-point run highlighted by Sophie Smith's three-ball lifted Wofford's lead over 10 points to 21-9 at the 1:49 mark. The Wasps hit their own three, but the Terriers led 21-12 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

E&H pulled with four points within the first minute of the second, but Wofford responded with a 10-point swing to create some distance. Lilly Hatton bookended the run with threes and added a layup in the middle to be responsible for eight of the 10 points, lifting Wofford to a 31-17 lead at the 7:15 mark. The squads kept trading some blows, with the Terriers responded to each of E&H's scores. But the Wasps secured the final four points of the half to enter the break down only 10, 43-33.

The Terriers needed to swing the momentum, so Jackie Carman opened the second half by hitting a three 12 seconds in. Though E&H responded with a jumper, Wofford then rattled off nine-straight points to extend its lead to 20 (55-35) at the 6:13 mark. E&H eventually pulled back to just under a 20-point deficit, but Rachael Rose put home back-to-back paint scores before Sophie Smith popped another trey to lift Wofford's lead back up to 24 (64-40) with 1:42 remaining. But the Wasps notched five-straight points to make the score 64-45 entering the final frame.

The Terriers got those points right back in the fourth when Jessie Parish hit a three-pointer 11 seconds in before Jackie Carman converted a pair of free throws. The sides traded blows the rest of the way, but the hole was too deep for the Wasps to get out of. Wofford raced to a 76-54 victory to conclude the homestand.

After finishing up four-straight home contests, the Terriers will now hit the road for four consecutive road games. Wofford next hits the court on Sunday, Dec. 11 when it travels to Chapel Hill to play No. 8 North Carolina. Tip-off against UNC is slated for 1:00 p.m.
