Long Ball Bites Terriers as Baseball Falls to Monmouth

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team fell victim to four home runs at Fluor Field Friday afternoon, losing to the Monmouth Hawks 18-9 in a neutral site affair. The Terriers fall to 2-3 on the young season, while the Hawks improve to 4-1 in the campaign.

Dom Marcoccio (0-1) suffered the loss in his second start of the season. He pitched 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks, striking out four. Six total Terriers took the mound in the contest, with Devon Sharts being the first out of the bullpen to toss 0.2 innings with two punchouts and five runs. Lucas Mahlstedt hurled 1.2 innings with one strikeout and four runs. Sam Stratton tossed a scoreless 0.2 innings in his season debut. O'Kelly McWilliams IV also made his season debut, fanning four in 1.2 innings of work, surrendering four runs. Michael Sills closed out the contest in his collegiate debut, recording his first strikeout while allowing just one run.

The win was credited to Trey Dombroski (2-0) of Monmouth, who tossed 6.0 innings of one-run ball in his start.

The Terriers tallied eight hits in the game but were out-hit significantly as Monmouth totaled 22. Jack Renwick led Wofford with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, driving in three runs. Zeb Roos was also 2-for-4 at the dish, knocking in two runs. Both Renwick and Ryan Galanie launched long balls in the game, with Renwick's being his first on the season. Galanie's is his third as he continues to lead the Terriers in home runs. It was a total team affair as 22 different Terriers played in the game, 16 position players and six pitchers.

Monmouth opened the scoring with an RBI single to right field in the top of the first inning to claim an early 1-0 lead.

Wofford immediately responded in the bottom of the frame with a Jack Renwick solo shot over the Green Monster in left field to even the score at one apiece.

The Hawks pulled back in front in the top of the third inning. A wild pitch allowed a runner to score, giving Monmouth the lead back. The Hawks padded their lead a little more with an RBI single and then an RBI double to claim a 4-1 advantage.

The next inning saw the Hawks tack on some more runs via a pair of home runs. First, a three-run homer over the Green Monster made it 7-1, and then a two-run shot to right field made it 9-1.

Monmouth continued to pad its lead in the sixth inning, once again hitting a two-run homer, this time to center. An RBI single and sacrifice fly would extend the Hawks' lead to 13-1 after two-thirds of the game.

The Terriers showed no quit, however, pulling closer in the bottom of the seventh with three big doubles. First, David Wiley doubled to right field to plate a run. Zeb Roos then recorded a double of his own down the right field line, scoring two runners. Not to be outdone, Renwick came up big with a double, again to right field, plating two more to cut the deficit to 13-6.

The Hawks responded in the top of the eighth to stave off the Wofford comeback attempt with five more runs on a team cycle. First, an RBI triple plated a run. This was followed by an RBI single and then an RBI double. A two-run homer concluded the scoring in the inning, making the score 18-6 in favor of Monmouth.

Wofford would not go quietly, though, as Ryan Galanie launched a solo homer down the right field line in the bottom of the eighth. Brice Martinez singled to right field and knocked home a run to make the deficit 18-8.

An RBI groundout in the bottom of the ninth brought the Terriers under a 10-run deficit, but the mountain was too high to climb. Monmouth held on for the 18-9 win.

Wofford remains in Greenville for a matchup with Marist tomorrow at Fluor Field. First pitch against the Red Foxes is slated for 11:00 a.m. The Terriers then return home to Russell C. King Field on Sunday for a rematch with Monmouth at 1:00 p.m. to conclude the weekend.
