BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team was in full control at Bill Masters Field, totaling 12 hits on offense and striking out 15 batters en route to an 8-3 victory over Gardner-Webb Saturday evening. The Terriers extend their winning streak to four and take a 2-0 series lead over the Runnin' Bulldogs to claim the series. Wofford improves to 16-8 while Gardner-Webb drops to 9-15.
Coulson Buchanan (2-0) earned the win for the Terriers after hurling 5.0 innings as the first reliever and recording nine punchouts, setting new career-high marks in both. He allowed just one run on two hits.
Josh Vitus started on the mound for the Terriers, going 3.0 innings and allowing two runs (neither earned) on four hits and two walks. He struck out three. Next on was Buchanan before
Luke Stephens pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out the side and relenting just a single hit.
The loss went to Runnin' Bulldog starter Bobby Alcock (0-2) after he tossed 3.2 innings and surrendered three runs (two earned).
The Terriers boasted 12 hits as a unit, with
Brennen Dorighi leading the way. The senior totaled three hits and a walk, tallying an RBI.
Cameron Gill and
Jack Renwick each knocked two hits, with two and one RBI, respectively.
Gunnar Johnson also drove home two runs, doing so with one swing on a pinch-hit double. With one base hit each,
Lawson Hill (15) and
John Dempsey (11) extended their on-base streaks. Wofford saw the ball well, working seven walks, with
Ryan Galanie and
Marshall Toole each receiving two free passes. On the basepaths, the Terriers swiped five bags.
Brice Martinez snagged two for a second-straight contest.
Wofford struck first in the top of the second for an early lead. With a runner on first and two outs,
Cameron Gill smacked a triple to the wall in the right center gap to give the Terriers a 1-0 advantage.
Gardner-Webb bounced back to take the lead in the bottom of the third. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score. A couple batters later, a fielding error brought home a second run to put the Runnin' Bulldogs in front, 2-1.
That lead was short-lived with Wofford responding in the bottom of the frame. With runners on first and second and one out,
John Dempsey kept swinging a hot bat and drove a single into right field to pull the Terriers even. An RBI groundout then scored the go-ahead run to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Terriers.
Wofford added a couple more runs in the top of the fifth.
Brennen Dorighi and
Nolen Hester led-off with a single and double, respectively, and Gill blooped a single into shallow center to score Dorighi.
Brice Martinez then laid down a well-placed sacrifice bunt to score Hester and extend the lead to 5-2.
The Terriers tacked on another run in the sixth when Dorighi roped an RBI double to right center, making the score 6-2.
After a scoreless seventh, Wofford scored again in the eighth to stretch the lead even further. With two runners on and one out,
Gunnar Johnson delivered a pinch-hit double into the right center gap to score both Terriers and make the score 8-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs showed no quit, breaking back onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth. A double down the left field line brought in a run, cutting Wofford's lead to 8-3.
That is where the score would stand, as Gardner-Webb would get two baserunners, but
Luke Stephens held firm to close the game out and secure the 8-3 Terrier win.
The series shifts back to Russell C. King Field for the Sunday finale tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
