Football Continues Spring Practice

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team returned from spring break and held three practices this week. On Thursday night, the team completed the week with a spirited session that included work on inside the 20, third down and the two-minute drill.

Highlights of team drills during the practice included first down receptions by Wyatt Bartkowiak, Jacob Ritchie, Jordan Davis, Michael Long, and Garrett Vernon, along with first down runs by Ryan Ingram and Nathan Walker. Defensively James Wells had several tackles for loss and Chuck Smith had a sack. During the two-minute offense, the first group on offense had two first down receptions by Kyle Watkins and Bryce Corriston had a first down run before a sack and pass break-up ended the drive.

On offense, six starters return along with eleven other players who have started one or more games in past seasons. "We are where I had hoped we would be in terms of the general understanding of the offense," said associate head coach/co-offensive coordinator Shawn Watson. "Spring ball is for being taught the system and to work hard on the fundamentals and technique aspect of it. I feel good about the scheme part of it, we just need to continue to work on the execution. We have put in a lot on these guys this spring and we will have the summer and training camp to teach it again. I feel good about what we have taught and what we have accomplished so far."

The defense looks to return eight starters with twelve other players who have started at least one game back as well. "When we came out here this spring our goals were first to establish a style of play, second to learn how to compete and third to get a schematic foundation," said co-defensive coordinator Rob Greene. "I feel like right now we are accomplishing those goals. There are a lot of guys that saw time last year that are a year older and know what it takes, so we are expecting big things from those guys. We have added some new things that I feel will help us in a lot of different ways and be more aggressive. I am happy where we are as a group and we will finish these last three practices strong."

After a brief break for the Easter weekend, the team will complete spring practices with three sessions next week.
