CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 22 Wofford baseball team took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Clemson Tigers immediately countered to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the frame and did not look back en route to a 17-4 victory over the Terriers at Doug Kingsmore Stadium Wednesday evening. Wofford falls to 30-11 overall with the result, and Clemson improves to 28-14.
Nine different pitchers took the mound for the Terriers, with starter
Clay Schwaner (0-1) suffering the loss. He tossed the first 1.2 innings with five runs allowed on four hits and a walk.
Carter Bailey and
Michael Sills each posted scoreless outings. Bailey hurled 0.2 innings with a strikeout and only one hit given up. Sills pitched 1.0 inning with a punchout and no hits.
Clemson reliever Jay Dill (1-0) earned the win after pitching 2.0 innings of scoreless ball, allowing no hits.
Brice Martinez led the Terrier offense with three hits and an RBI, but the story of the day was
Lawson Hill with his two-hit performance. Hill entered the contest with 264 career hits, one shy of tying Mac Doyle for first all-time on Wofford's career hits list. With a first-inning single, Hill wasted no time tying Doyle's mark, but he wasn't done there. In the top of the sixth, Hill knocked another single into right field, notching career hit 266 to become Wofford's career all-time hits leader.
The hits also extend Hill's team-best hitting streak to 14 games.
Brennen Dorighi remained hot, too, as the reigning SoCon Player of the Week extended his on-base streak to a team-best 22 games.
Nolen Hester's hit helped him stay on Dorighi's heels by lifting his on-base streak to 21.
Lawson Hill came into the contest on the verge of history, and he did not waste any time cementing his status in Wofford's record books. With two outs and a 2-2 count in the top of the first, the 5
th-year player dropped a single into shallow right field. When his feet touched first base, Hill had secured his 265
th career base hit to tie for first place in Wofford history.
The Terriers did not score in the frame, but Clemson did. A two-run triple into the left center gap gave the Tigers an early 2-0 lead after the first.
Wofford would respond in the second inning to pull ahead. With no outs and runners on the corners,
Trey Yunger laid down a well-placed sacrifice bunt to bring home the first run for the Terriers.
Brice Martinez roped a double down the left field line to plate the tying run, and
Nolen Hester then knocked a single into left to score Martinez and give Wofford a 3-2 edge.
Clemson bounced back in a big way to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the second. A throwing error allowed a run to come home, leveling the score. The Tigers then hit a two-run home run to center field to pull back in front at 5-3.
The Tigers padded their lead a little in the bottom of the third. A double down the left field line extended the margin to 6-3.
Clemson pulled even further ahead in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run single and a two-run homer made the deficit 10-3 in favor of the Tigers.
With five more runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers blew the game open to extend their lead to double-digits at 15-3.
Hill was not satisfied with sharing the hits record long. In the top of the sixth inning, he knocked a single through the right side to claim sole possession of Wofford's all-time hits record with 266 career base knocks.
After both squads went scoreless in the sixth, Clemson again utilized the long ball in the seventh. A solo shot made the score 16-3.
Wofford secured a run in the top of the eighth.
Gunnar Johnson roped a pinch-hit double off the wall in right field, and
Ryan Galanie brought him home with a single into right center. The score stood at 16-4.
The Tigers immediately got that run back with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to make the score 17-4.
That is where it would stand, as Wofford was held off the board in the ninth for a 17-4 defeat.
The 22
nd-ranked Terriers remain on the road this weekend when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama for a three-game series with Samford. The first game of the set is slated for a 5:00 p.m. ET first pitch Friday night.
