Wofford To Celebrate 50 Years of Title IX

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX with a variety of events over the 2022-23 academic year. The celebration commemorates the anniversary of the landmark federal law signed on June 23, 1972, that prohibits gender discrimination in educational programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.

The celebration at Wofford will include activities during the September 10 football game against Elon and featured Title IX games for volleyball, women's soccer, women's basketball, women's tennis and lacrosse, along with other activities.

Women's sports began at Wofford in 1980 with volleyball and basketball. The number of teams has grown to 10, with softball, which will begin competing in 2024. An additional event will be held to introduce the community to the first softball recruiting class and the new softball stadium in the fall.

Title IX is part of the Education Amendments of 1972. It states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
