SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College head women's basketball coach
Jimmy Garrity announced today the schedule for the upcoming 2022-23 campaign. The slate features 28 total games with 13 home contests inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
The schedule consists of a balanced split of 14 non-conference games to begin the season before rounding out with 14 conference clashes. The Terriers will be getting their work in, as three of the non-conference games are against Power Five foes: Clemson, North Carolina and Tennessee. Despite having slightly more road games than home affairs, the Terriers don't have to leave the comfort of the Carolinas much with 19 of the contests being set in either North or South Carolina. However, the slate does feature a few games in which Wofford must travel more than two states away. These clashes come at Youngstown State in Ohio and Bellarmine in Kentucky during non-conference play and then at Samford in league action.
"We are excited to have our students back on campus and to get ready for another season of basketball," said Garrity. "Our staff has put together a terrific schedule that is challenging and will provide tough competition for our program. This might be the toughest schedule we have had since arriving six years ago. We start the season off on the road against a really good Youngstown State team that won 23 games last year with nearly everyone returning. We follow that with another road trip to Clemson. We will be tested early in the season and throughout our non-conference schedule as we play teams from nine different Division I conferences. It should prepare us well for Southern Conference play. Our players and staff have worked extremely hard this summer and are looking forward to another exciting season."
The season begins with a pair of road games, the first time the Terriers start away from home since the 2019-20 campaign, which saw the first three games as away contests. Wofford opens on Nov. 7 at Youngstown State before returning to the Palmetto State for a clash at Clemson on Nov. 10. Wofford hosts its home opener on Nov. 16 when Coastal Carolina comes to town. The Terriers then hit the road once more for a pair of away games in the Tar Heel State, first at High Point on Nov. 19 and then at UNC Wilmington on Nov. 22.
Wofford returns home for four-straight games inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The homestand opens with Southern Wesleyan on Nov. 28, followed by Davidson two days later on Nov. 30 for the return of Education Day. Appalachian State opens the December slate with a game on Dec. 3, and the homestand wraps up with Emory and Henry on Dec. 6.
It's back on the bus for the Terriers with four consecutive road affairs, starting with a trip to Chapel Hill on Dec. 11 for a match-up against UNC. On Dec. 17, Wofford heads to Kentucky to face Bellarmine and then plays at UNC Asheville on Dec. 19 before taking a holiday break. Action picks back up with a game at Tennessee on Dec. 27 before concluding the non-conference slate with a home contest against Erskine on Dec. 31.
With the new year comes the Southern Conference half of the schedule, in the which the Terriers begin by facing rival Furman at home on Jan. 5. The first road games in league play are the following week with a North Carolina swing at Western Carolina (Jan. 12) and UNCG (Jan. 14). The Terriers return home for a pair of contests against Chattanooga on Jan. 19 and then ETSU on Jan. 21. Wofford then hits the road for its longest stretch away from home in league play, with three games at Mercer (Jan. 26), Samford (Jan. 28) and Furman (Feb. 4).
The home stretch of SoCon action continues with home contests against UNCG on Feb. 9 and Western Carolina on Feb. 11. It's then time for the Tennessee trip when the Terriers travel to ETSU on Feb. 16 and Chattanooga on Feb. 18. The regular season concludes at home with Samford on Feb. 23 and then Mercer on Feb. 25 for Senior Night.
The Southern Conference Tournament will be held in Asheville, N.C. from March 2-5 at the Harrah's Cherokee Center.
Wofford enters the 2022-23 season looking to build upon its program-best 2021-22 campaign. With an 11-3 league clip, the Terriers set a program record while also collecting numerous program firsts en route to an appearance in the WNIT, also a first for the program.
