Women’s Basketball Drops Home Contest to ETSU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team could not overcome a big third quarter by the ETSU Buccaneers inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, falling 75-58 Saturday afternoon. Wofford moves to 13-6 (3-2 SoCon) with the result while ETSU improves to 15-6 (2-3 SoCon).

The defeat snaps Wofford's 10-game home winning streak, a program record for the Terriers' Division I era.

Wofford knocked down 10 threes in the contest at a 35.7 percent rate, but the Terriers could not get the same success on their two-pointers, shooting 31.3 percent overall (21-of-67). ETSU shot well, posting an overall mark of 47.7 percent and 37.5 percent from three. Though the Bucs held the rebounding advantage, 37-30, the Terriers secured two more offensive boards and led the second chance points battle 16-6. Though Wofford played clean with just eight turnovers, the Terriers could only force one more ETSU giveaway, and the Bucs dominated the paint, 36-16.

Annabelle Schultz led the charge for Wofford as one of three Terriers in double figures. She posted 13 points with four made triples, four rebounds and two assists. Jackie Carman was just behind with 12 points and four boards.

Rachael Rose notched 11 points while pacing the team in rebounds (seven), assists (five) and steals (three).

Lilly Hatton netted nine points and secured six boards. She remained a force in the post with three blocks. Jessie Parish earned five points in three minutes of work, and Helen Matthews contributed four points and four rebounds. Ja'Rae Smith and Indiya Clarke each scored two points, and Clarke added three boards.

ETSU opened the game with eight-straight points, but a Lilly Hatton three at the 6:03 mark got Wofford on the board. The Terriers would end the quarter on an eight-point run of their own to claim an 11-10 lead.

The run extended to 11 points overall when Jessie Parish opened the second quarter with a trey. After a Buc score, Jackie Carman drained a triple before Parish converted a pair of foul shots to give Wofford its largest lead in the contest, a seven-point (19-12) edge with 7:33 remaining. But a seven-point swing in favor of ETSU evened the game at 19 all, and though Helen Matthews put Wofford back in front, the Bucs scored seven in a row once more to reclaim the lead. Wofford fought back and pulled ahead again with a Carman lay-in at just over a minute remaining, but a paint score in the final seconds of the half put ETSU ahead, 32-31, at the break.

The Bucs came out firing with six consecutive points to start the second half. Catching a wave of momentum, ETSU scored 26 points in the third quarter while holding Wofford to eight to hold a 58-39 advantage entering the final frame.

The Terriers gave a fight in the final quarter, utilizing a five-point run punctuated by an Annabelle Schultz three to pull within 13 (69-53) with 3:47 left. But the hole was too large and the time remaining too low, as Wofford could not complete a comeback, falling 75-58.

The Terriers will hit the road next week, setting their sights first on Mercer on Thursday, Jan. 26. Tip-off in Macon, Ga. is set for 7:00 p.m. Two days later, Wofford will go to Birmingham, Ala. to face off against Samford.
