Rachael Rose Named SoCon Player of the Week

The sophomore is the first Terrier to earn the honor this season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its selection for the women's basketball player of the week, with Wofford guard Rachael Rose earning the distinction. Rose is the first Terrier to earn the award this season. The award is selected by the league office.

This is Rose's first SoCon weekly honor in her career after earlier being named SoCon Player of the Month for November. She is no stranger to weekly awards, though, having won Big South Freshman of the Week eight times last season. She is the first Terrier to earn player of the week honors since Jackie Carman claimed the nod on Feb. 15, 2022 last season.

"I'm really happy for Rachael to receive this recognition," said head coach Jimmy Garrity. "She surely deserves it after an impressive week of basketball against Mercer and Samford. When you look at her stat line she has it stuffed with positive numbers."

Rose was one of Wofford's most consistent contributors during its historic week. The sophomore averaged 17.5 points per game and was just one-point shy of the Wofford team lead. She shot nearly 40 percent while knocking down over 10 free throws. Rose was Wofford's leading rebounder (17) and assister (nine) while also adding three steals on defense. The Scranton, Pa. native opened the week by notching a double-double, her fourth of the season, at Mercer by way of 15 points and 10 boards. She followed suit with a 20-point performance against Samford while adding seven boards and five assists. Rose has reached double-digit scoring in eight-straight games. In both contests last week, Rose needed to hit free throws late to preserve the Terrier lead and stave off comebacks, and she came up clutch each time, combining to go 7-of-10 at the line in the final minute of both games to help seal Wofford's historic wins.

Those historic victories featured the program's first-ever road triumph over Mercer, the last remaining team in the league that Wofford had not defeated on the road. The Terriers then downed Samford two days later in Birmingham, Ala. to complete the road sweep. Wofford became the first SoCon squad to complete that road sweep since Chattanooga in the 2016-17 campaign.

The Terriers now set their sights on one more road contest, a match-up in Greenville, S.C. on Saturday, Feb. 4 against the rival Furman Paladins. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. in Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
