SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its selection for women's basketball player of the week, with Wofford's
Rachael Rose earning the honor. The selection is made by the league office.
Â
This is Rose's third weekly honor of the season, matching the single-season program record set prior by Jenny Nett (2001-02) and Chloe Wanink (2018-19), who each won three in their respective campaigns. It is Rose's fourth career player of the week recognition, matching the Wofford record for a career, also previously set by Nett and Wanink.
Â
"I'm really excited for Rachael to receive this recognition," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "Her stat line versus Virginia was just incredible, missing a triple-double by one assist. She's been fantastic all season long, and this recognition is well deserved."
Â
Rose and the Terriers played only one game during the selection period, but it was a massive result against Virginia. On the road in Charlottesville, the junior recorded a double-double and near triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high nine assists, topping the team in all three categories. She added in three steals while playing all 40 minutes. The native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was 7-of-15 from the floor with a three-pointer and 6-of-7 at the charity stripe. But no shot was bigger than her last, as with time winding down Rose netted the game-winning bucket with a mid-range floater over two defenders with 0.4 remaining on the clock to seal the historic 71-70 victory for the Terriers.
Â
The win was Wofford's first ever over an ACC team and only its second over a Power Five foe (Alabama in 2012). The Terriers will be back in action tonight against Tennessee with eyes on another upset win. Wofford battles the Lady Volunteers at 6:30 p.m.
