Gill’s Grand Slam Lifts Baseball to 9-6 Win Over Kent State

Terriers open series with win behind two big innings

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team fell behind early at Russell C. King Field to Kent State, but a grand slam by Cameron Gill in the seventh inning flipped the script and secured a comeback 9-6 triumph for the Terriers Friday night. Wofford improves to 4-1 on the season with the series-opening win, and Kent State drops to 2-2.

Dom Marcoccio (1-0) earned the win in relief for Wofford after tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out one while allowing just one hit. Coulson Buchanan started for the Terriers, pitching 3.0 innings and surrendering three runs. He punched out three batters. Wofford utilized six pitchers in the contest, with four combining to shutout the Golden Flashes over the final 4.2 innings. Ryder Moye turned in a scoreless frame prior to Marcoccio, and Sam Stratton retired the only batter he faced. Luke Stephens (1) closed out the final 1.2 frames, striking out two en route to his first save of the campaign.

The contest saw plenty of offense as the two sides combined for over 20 hits and 15 total runs. Despite being out-hit 12-9, the Terriers capitalized on seven walks and a pair of Golden Flash errors.

Brice Martinez and Cameron Gill each tallied two-hit games and combined to knock in seven of Wofford's nine runs. Martinez totaled three RBI, and Gill brought home a career-high four RBI. The duo each recorded a big extra-base hit with the bases loaded, as Martinez recorded all three of his RBI via a triple.

But no hit was bigger than Gill's, a grand slam off the right field scoreboard. The blast was the first of the senior's career, and it proved to be the winning knock.

Kent State opened the scoring in the third inning with a solo home run to right. Later in the frame, the Golden Flashes added two more on a double to right center to make the score 3-0.

A two-run single in the fourth extended Kent State's lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the frame, Wofford found a rhythm and tied the game. After a strikeout began the inning, the Terriers worked three-straight walks to load the bases. Ryan Galanie brought home a run on a fielder's choice that did not record an out, keeping the bases packed. Brice Martinez stepped up and ripped a laser into the right field corner, clearing the bases as he slid in safely at third with a triple. Trey Yunger tied the contest with a sacrifice bunt to plate Martinez, making the score 5-5.

In the top of the fifth, the Golden Flashes utilized their own triple to tally a run and pull back ahead, 6-5.

The Terriers hit another groove in the seventh to pull in front. A walk and two singles loaded the bases for Cameron Gill, who connected on a pitch, launching it opposite field off the scoreboard for a grand slam. The clout made the score 9-6 in favor of the Terriers.

Sam Stratton toed the rubber in the eighth to retire a batter before handing the ball off to Luke Stephens. The senior righty closed out the affair from there, sealing the comeback triumph for Wofford and extending the winning streak to four games.

The Terriers and Golden Flashes are scheduled to face off again tomorrow in game two of the series. Wofford will look to notch a series victory with a new first pitch time of 3:00 p.m.
