SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind a pair of stout performances by the freshman pitching duo of
Charlie Weber and
Zac Cowan, the Wofford baseball team notched a 7-3 victory Saturday afternoon over the Kent State Golden Flashes at Russell C. King Field. Wofford extends its winning streak to five and improves to 5-1 on the season. Kent State drops to 2-3.
Â
Charlie Weber toed the rubber in a starting role for the Terriers, tossing the first 4.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven hitters.
Zac Cowan (1-0) pitched the remaining 5.0 innings in relief, earning his first-career win. He surrendered just three hits and one walk while not allowing a run. Cowan also recorded seven punchouts. By each striking out seven, the duo have now tied one another for the most punchouts by a Terrier in a game this season, and the marks are new career bests for both.
Â
Wofford out-hit Kent State 9-8. The Terriers only struck out three times while tossing 14 K's, and Wofford tallied three walks at the dish while giving out only one free pass.
Â
Ryan Galanie and
Jack Renwick each tallied two-hit days at the plate. Renwick recorded two RBI while Galanie knocked in one run.
Dixon Black added one hit and also drove in a pair.
David Wiley swiped a base, and Renwick stole two.
Â
Wofford got on the board in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs.
Dixon Black opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, and
Jack Renwick's double plated another. The Terriers led 2-0 after an inning.
Â
In the top of the second, Kent State flipped the script. A solo home run put the Golden Flashes on the board, and a two-run homer later in the frame put them ahead, 3-2.
Â
In the fifth inning,
Ryan Galanie brought home the tying run with an RBI groundout.
Â
The Terriers retook the lead an inning later with
Andrew Calhoun's RBI double to right, making the score 4-3.
Â
Wofford broke the game open in the seventh. Black singled to right center to bring home a run, and Renwick's bunt plated one more. The punctuation mark was a well-executed double steal, with
David Wiley swiping second but more importantly, Renwick scurried home for a 7-3 Terrier lead.
Â
Cowan clamped down from there on the bump, holding the Golden Flashes scoreless over the final two frames to seal the 7-3 Terrier triumph and series win.
Â
Wofford returns to the diamond tomorrow for the series finale against Kent State. The Terriers will aim for the sweep with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
