Wofford Women Finish Second at SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 2023 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded on Sunday at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility, with Wofford College winning five individual championships. The Wofford women were second overall with 120 points, while the men were seventh with 34 points.
 
The 120 points scored by the women were the second-most in school history and it is the second time in the last three years they have finished second in the SoCon. Netanya Linares was named the Women's Most Outstanding Athlete for the second time (2021 and 2023).
 
Wofford won five individual titles for the second straight season. Southern Conference titles were won by Netanya Linares (pentathlon), Kerrington Johnson (60-meter hurdles), Jasmine Jefferson (400 meters), Madeline McNinch (200 meters) and Tanner Henry (high jump).
 
There were seven All-Southern Conference honors earned by the Terriers: Netanya Linares (pentathlon), Madeline McNinch (200 meters, long jump), Kerrington Johnson (60-meter hurdles), Jasmine Jefferson (400 meters), Georgia McDevitt (long jump) and Tanner Henry (high jump).
 
Three school records were set during the championship. Terriers also earned a total of 15 All-Freshman Team honors during the weekend, the second-most in school history.  
 
"It was a hard-fought weekend by the women's team," said head coach Johnny Bomar. "Some people really excelled and stepped up when it mattered and I am very proud of them for that. The men fought hard as well and overall it was a weekend that we can be proud of."
 
Sunday began with the completion of the heptathlon, with Zion Bennett finishing seventh with 4,160 points and Sebastian LaTorre taking eighth place with 4,029 points.
 
In the field events on Sunday, Christopher Sheppard was seventh in the triple jump at 13.48 meters. Dani Emmen was fourth in the women's weight throw with a distance of 14.30 meters. Jalen Belton took eighth place in the men's weight throw at 13.68 meters. Rylee Jorgensen was fourth in the triple jump at 11.47 meters
 
The women's 60-meter hurdles were won by senior Kerrington Johnson for the third straight season in a time of 8.53. Netanya Linares was fourth in the event at 8.72. It is the fifth straight time a Terrier has won the event, as Amber Lust (2019) and Destiny Shippy (2020) also took the title. In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Grant Witherspoon was seventh at 8.53.
 
In the women's 60 meters, Madeline McNinch was third at 7.66, with Ella Tennant fourth at 7.71 and Georgia McDevitt seventh at 7.93. Nevius Fisher took fifth place in the men's 60 meters at 6.89.  In the women's mile finals, Mary Claire Ridgeway was ninth at 5:10.70.
 
Jasmine Jefferson won the 400 meters in 56.16, the first time a Terrier has won the event. Dahlia Cutler added a sixth-place finish in 57.75 as well. In the 5,000 meters, Alexus Atkins was 13th overall.
 
In the women's 200 meters, Madeline McNinch won the conference title with a time of 24.70 to take the event in back-to-back years. Jasmine Jefferson was fourth in the event at 25.01. Cameron Dalton was fourth in the men's 200 meters at 21.73.
 
To end the day, the women's 4x400 relay team of Dahlia Cutler, Madeline McNinch, Brooke Sayre and Jasmine Jefferson was fifth with a time of 3:55.34. The men's 4x400 relay team of Robert Hilsman, Zion Bennett, Thomas Stamper, and Conor Murphy was fifth with a time of 3:20.33.
 
Samford won its eighth straight women's title and fourth straight men's title.
