SPARTANBURG, S.C. – There was no shortage of offense at Russell C. King Field Tuesday night, as Wofford and Winthrop combined for 28 runs and 24 hits, but it was the Terriers that ultimately grabbed the victory, 18-10, in the contest. Wofford extends its winning streak to seven and improves to 7-1. Winthrop falls to 4-4.
Â
Terrier starter
Coulson Buchanan (1-0) earned the win after tossing the first 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out seven batters. Buchanan was the first of six pitchers used by Wofford, with
Mike Eggert making one of the largest impacts out of the bullpen. The junior threw 4.0 innings and notched five strikeouts, both career highs.
Branton Little pitched a scoreless ninth with a punchout to close the contest. Despite the high-scoring affair, the Terrier pitching staff combined to hurl 15 strikeouts, a new single-game high this season.
Â
Aaron White (0-1) took the loss in a starting role for the Eagles, surrendering six runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Â
All nine hitters in Wofford's starting lineup recorded a hit, and six of them notched multi-hit outings.
David Wiley led the way with four hits and six runs batted in, both marks career bests. He was a homer shy of the cycle.
Brice Martinez and
Trey Yunger also drove in multiple runs to go with their two hits, and Yunger added a pair of walks to reach base four times.
Â
The Terriers set a tone for the contest with a big inning in the second, plating six runs.
David Wiley tripled with the bases loaded to put Wofford on the board, clearing the bases. A fielder's choice plated Wiley, and a two-run single by
Brice Martinez made the score 6-0.
Â
Wofford tacked on three more in the following inning when an error allowed two runners to score, and
Marshall Toole raced home later on a rundown play. Wofford held what seemed to be a commanding 9-0 lead early.
Â
Just when it seemed like things were about to get out of hand, Winthrop responded in their own big way. In the top of the fourth, the Eagles tallied eight runs to pull within one of Wofford, 9-8.
Â
But
Trey Yunger delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to create some separation, 11-8. A bases-loaded walk drawn by
Ryan Galanie in the sixth added another, 12-8.
Â
In the seventh, Wofford created more distance. Wiley ripped a double that plated a pair, and an error then allowed another run to score. Toole delivered a single to center that score another run, making the margin 16-8.
Â
The Eagles would not go down quietly, though. A two-run Winthrop double in the eighth made the score 18-10.
Â
But the Terriers got those runs right back in the bottom of the frame. Wiley came up big again, singling to left to bring in a run. After the left fielder bobbled the ball on the play, a second run raced home via the miscue to make the score 18-10.
Â
Branton Little toed the rubber in the top of the ninth to set the side down in order and lock down the final score of 18-10 and a Terrier victory.
Â
Wofford remains home this weekend for a four-game series to conclude the 12-game homestand. Sacred Heart comes to town with game one slated for a 5:30 p.m. start on Friday.
