Baseball Drops High-Scoring Road Contest to Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – Foley Field saw a surge of offense Tuesday evening with the Wofford baseball team and Georgia Bulldogs combining for 18 runs and 25 hits, but it was Georgia who prevailed, 10-8. The Terriers fall to 14-2 with the result, and the Bulldogs improve to 13-4.

The loss snaps Wofford's 14-game win streak, but despite it coming to an end it will go down as a new program record.

Coulson Buchanan (2-1) suffered the loss for Wofford, pitching 3.0 innings in relief and surrendering four runs. He struck out two.

Bulldog reliever Matthew Hoskins (1-0) received the win after allowing no runs and just one hit in 2.1 innings of work.

The Georgia offense out-hit Wofford 16-9 in the contest. Ryan Galanie led the way for the Terriers with three hits, one-third of the Terrier total. This extends his on-base streak to 41 games. Andrew Mannelly and Jack Renwick each knocked in a pair of runs. A couple of Terriers lifted long balls in the game: Renwick and Aaron Thomas. Renwick's was his first of the season, and Thomas clubbed the first of his career.

Wofford struck fast with three runs in the top of the first. After Ryan Galanie notched a single and Dixon Black walked, Trey Yunger ripped a single to right to plate Galanie and put the Terriers on the board. An error helped the runners advance, and Andrew Mannelly kept his hot streak alive by roping a single opposite field to left to score both men and give Wofford an early 3-0 advantage.

The Terriers tacked on one more in the top of the second when Aaron Thomas led-off the inning by launching a solo shot into the trees beyond the left field fence. His first-career clout made the score 4-0.

But Georgia fought back in the bottom of the frame. The Bulldogs powered across five runs, aided by a pair of homers, to claim the lead at 5-4.

Wofford struck back to even the score in the top of the third. With runners on the corners, Cameron Gill laid down a perfect bunt to plate a run and pull the Terriers level, 5-5.

The Terriers pulled back in front with a run in the top of the fourth. With David Wiley on first base, Galanie singled to the shortstop, whose errant throw to first allowed the runners to advance. With no one covering home, Wiley did not break stride racing around the basepaths, and by the time a Bulldog could reach the plate it was just too late. Wofford pulled ahead, 6-5.

The see-saw game continued in the bottom of the fourth, with Georgia plating four runs to pull back in front at 9-6.

The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth, stretching their lead to 10-6.

The pendulum swung back in Wofford's favor a little in the top of the ninth as Jack Renwick lifted a two-run homer to left that cut the margin to two runs. But it would not be enough, as the Terriers were unable to claim more, falling to Georgia 10-8.

Wofford remains on the road this weekend when it heads to Cincinnati, Ohio for a three-game set with Xavier. Game one against the Musketeers is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
