ATLANTA – The Wofford baseball team got back on track Tuesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium, defeating Georgia Tech 8-5. The Terriers improve to 15-5 after snapping a four-game losing streak, and the Yellow Jackets drop to 14-7.
Â
The win is Wofford's first ever over Georgia Tech, and it's the first triumph over an ACC opponent since downing Boston College in 2018. The Terriers own two Power Five wins in a season for the first time since 2015.
Â
Lucas Mahlstedt (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Terriers after tossing 3.2 innings and allowing only one run. He struck out two.
Coulson Buchanan started for Wofford, pitching the first 2.0 innings with no runs and only two hits allowed.
Matthew Marchal (1) closed out the contest, hurling the final 2.0 innings to shut the door and claim the save. He allowed just one run (unearned) on three hits and two walks with a pair of punchouts.
Â
The Terrier pitching staff relied heavily on its defense tonight, striking out only four batters. And that defense was stout, committing zero errors. And though the Yellow Jackets tallied 15 hits, the Wofford arms remained cool under pressure to strand 16 Georgia Tech runners. This includes four times in which the Yellow Jackets left the bases loaded.
Â
Georgia Tech reliever Aeden Finateri (1-1) suffered the loss after pitching 3.0 innings with a run given up on two hits.
Â
Ryan Galanie and
Brice Martinez paced the Terrier offense with three hits and an RBI apiece.
Trey Yunger tallied two hits to make three players with multi-hit outings. Two of Galanie's hits went for extra bases, including his team- and conference-leading seventh dinger of the season.
Dixon Black's lone hit of the contest was a long ball of his own.
Â
After a scoreless first frame, the Terriers opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the second.
Dixon Black clubbed a lead-off solo shot to kick things off. Two base hits followed, setting the scene for
Cameron Gill to rope a double off the left field wall, plating both runners. Later in the frame,
David Wiley's RBI single made the early Wofford lead 4-0.
Â
The Yellow Jackets struck back in the bottom of the third, hitting two homers to score three runs and pull within one, 4-3.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, Georgia Tech utilized a sacrifice fly to tie the contest at 4-4.
Â
Wofford used a sacrifice fly of its own in the top of the fifth to pull back in front. After
Ryan Galanie opened the inning with a double, he stole third and scored on
Trey Yunger's fly ball to right. The Terriers led, 5-4.
Â
The Terriers tacked on another in the sixth. Gill walked and advanced to third on
Andrew Mannelly's single.
Jack Renwick then laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Gill, making the margin 6-4.
Â
Brice Martinez provided another run for Wofford in the seventh with an RBI single. The Terrier lead stood at 7-4.
Â
Georgia Tech began its comeback quest with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth, cutting the margin to 7-5.
Â
In the top of the ninth, Galanie delivered an insurance run with a solo bomb to make the score 8-5.
Â
Georgia Tech showed no quit, however, loading the bases with two outs. But
Matthew Marchal clamped down on the mound, inducing the game-ending groundout to first that sealed the 8-5 Terrier triumph.
Â
Wofford returns home this weekend to open Southern Conference play against VMI. Game one of the three-game set with the Keydets is slated for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch Friday night.
