Baseball Claims Lopsided 16-3 Road Win at Presbyterian

Terriers plate eight in ninth after Buchanan shines on mound

CLINTON, S.C. – After Coulson Buchanan dazzled on the mound with a career-high 10 punchouts, the offense rolled with 16 runs on 15 hits at the PC Baseball Complex, giving the Terriers a big 16-3 win over Presbyterian Wednesday night. The Terriers improve to 18-6 with the triumph, and the Blue Hose drop to 11-15.

Wofford starter Coulson Buchanan (3-1) spun a gem, tossing 7.0 innings and 10 strikeouts. Both marks were personal career highs and single-game highs for a Terrier pitcher this season. He allowed three runs on five hits and one walk. Lucas Mahlstedt and Sam Stratton each turned in a scoreless inning over the final two frames. Neither allowed a hit, and both struck out one batter.

Presbyterian reliever Logan Ymker (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing a run on two hits and walk in 2.0 innings of work.

Eight of the nine starting Terrier batters recorded a hit, and all nine reached base. Ryan Galanie led the charge with three knocks and two RBI. One of his hits was his SoCon-leading ninth long ball of the campaign. Five other Terriers notched a pair of hits each, with Trey Yunger, Brice Martinez and David Wiley each bringing home three runs. Gunnar Johnson walked four times, one shy of matching the program record for walks in a game. As a squad, the Terriers drew 11 walks in the contest.

Presbyterian struck first with an RBI double in the bottom of the first, claiming an early 1-0 edge.

But Wofford hit back in the top of the second, tying the contest with a David Wiley single that plated Brice Martinez.

The Terriers then added one more in the third to take the lead. Ryan Galanie roped a homer over the left center fence to give Wofford a 2-1 advantage.

Another Terrier scored in the top of the fifth to extend the lead. Martinez reached on a fielder's choice, and as the throw skipped away, Galanie raced home to score on the error. The score stood at 3-1.

Wofford broke it open in the sixth with five runs in the top of the frame. Jack Renwick's bunt single began the onslaught, and Galanie added another with an RBI single up the middle. Trey Yunger plated one more with a groundout, and Martinez laced an opposite field single to right that scored yet another. Wofford concluded its scoring with a first-and-third delayed steal play during which Dixon Black scurried across the plate, making the Terrier lead 8-1.

Presbyterian got back on the board with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Blue Hose still trailed, 8-3.

But the wheels fell off for the Blue Hose in the top of the ninth, during which Wofford doubled its score with eight runs in the frame. The margin was 16-3, at which it stood after Sam Stratton locked down the bottom of the ninth for the Terriers to secure a midweek victory.

Wofford will return home this weekend for a three-game set against Siena. Action starts with a doubleheader on Saturday with game one's first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
