Baseball Earns Pair of Wins Over Siena

Terriers run-rule the Saints in game two to claim both legs of doubleheader

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was a tale of two games Saturday at Russell C. King Field, as the Wofford baseball team proved victorious in both ends of a doubleheader with Siena. The Terriers outlasted the Saints in a 2-1 pitchers' duel in the first contest, but the second was not close as Wofford ran away to a 17-5 run-rule win in seven innings. The Terriers improve to 20-6 with the triumphs, and the Saints fall to 2-24.

Wofford pitchers issued only a single walk between the two contests. Trey Yunger led the Terrier hitting efforts with five base knocks between the games.

GAME ONE
Matthew Marchal (4-1) started and earned the win after 5.0 innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits and struck out six. Lucas Mahlstedt (3) closed out the final 4.0 innings to earn the save, allowing no runs with three hits and four punchouts. Neither pitcher issued a walk.

Siena starter Arlo Marynczak (0-4) suffered the loss after giving up two run on five hits in 4.0 innings.

Trey Yunger notched a pair of hits to pace the Terrier offense in the game. David Wiley earned Wofford's lone RBI in the contest.

The Terriers got on the board first in the bottom of the second with a delayed double-steal play. Cameron Gill raced home for the early 1-0 edge.

Siena tied the game up with a solo homer in the third, but a Wiley single in the fourth plated Yunger to give Wofford a 2-1 lead.

The advantage would not fold, as Matthew Marchal and Lucas Mahlstedt combined to blank the Saints from there, notching the 2-1 triumph for the Terriers.

GAME TWO
Terrier reliever Branton Little (3-0) earned the victory after 2.0 innings with just a run allowed on two hits and a walk. He struck out one. Charlie Weber started, going 4.0 innings with four runs and four strikeouts. Holden Wilder pitched a scoreless seventh, punching out one.

Sebastian Bentz (0-5) suffered the loss as the starter for the Saints, tossing 1.2 innings with six runs allowed on four hits and three walks.

Yunger carried his strong hitting efforts into game two, adding three more with a pair of runs driven in. Ryan Galanie, David Wiley and Gunnar Johnson each recorded two-hit outings, as the latter two brought home two runs each. Galanie earned one RBI. Dixon Black also drove home two, but it was Aaron Thomas who led the way with three RBI.

The scoring started with a Yunger RBI double in the bottom of the first for the early 1-0 lead.

Siena hit a two-run homer in the second to take a lead, but the Terriers exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the frame to claim it right back with authority. The onslaught began with a Gunnar Johnson solo homer. The scoring was highlighted by a Dixon Black two-RBI double and Aaron Thomas' two-RBI fielder's choice. Wofford led 9-2.

The Saints added a pair of solo homers in the third and fourth to cut the deficit to 9-4.

But in the bottom of the fourth, Wofford plated three more. Johnson added a run with a single, and Thomas brought in another with a sacrifice fly. A balk made the score 12-4.

A wild pitch gave Siena another run in the fifth, but the bottom of the frame saw the Terriers add three more. Wiley added one with a single, and Alex Nevils hit his first-career hit, scoring two for a 15-5 lead.

Two more scored in the sixth thanks to Yunger and Wiley, and Holden Wilder locked down the seventh for the run-rule 17-5 victory.

Wofford and Siena will battle once more in the series finale tomorrow afternoon. The Terriers aim for a sweep with a first pitch of 1:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
