SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team was unable to close out a comeback Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field, falling to Siena 7-4. Despite the loss, the Terriers still win the series after taking a twin bill yesterday. Wofford falls to 20-7 with the result, and Siena improves to 3-24.
Â
Terrier starter
Zac Cowan (3-2) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs (three earned) in 3.0 innings on six hits. He struck out six. Of note,
Luke Stephens tossed 2.0 scoreless frames to conclude the contest, striking out three.
Â
The Saints used just two pitchers. Starter Ryan Bates (2-4) earned the win after 6.2 innings with four runs and four hits. Noah Rodriguez (2) closed out the final 2.1 innings, notching the save.
Â
Wofford recorded just two hits in the contest, with
Marshall Toole accounting for half of them.
Ryan Galanie added one, a double, and
Jack Renwick contributed a home run.
Â
Siena opened hot, plating a run in the first and two more in the second. With another in the third, the Saints held a 4-0 advantage early.
Â
But Wofford got on the board with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
Â
Siena added one run each in three-straight innings from the fifth to the seventh, extending the margin to 7-1.
Â
But in the bottom of the seventh, the Terriers seemed to begin mounting a comeback.
Jack Renwick lifted a deep three-run blast to left field that cut the score to 7-4.
Â
But the bats went quiet from there, and the comeback attempt was not able to get back going. The Saints held on to win, 7-4.
Â
Wofford hits the road on Tuesday to begin a four-game road swing. The Terriers will take on College of Charleston at 4:00 p.m. on April 4.
