CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina University on Friday and Saturday. The Terriers had seven first place finishes and had numerous top ten finishes in the meet as the women finished second overall.
On Friday in the track events,
Robert Hilsman was first in the men's 200 meters with a time of 21.61 that set a new freshman record for the Terriers.
Mary Claire Ridgeway was seventh in the 1,500 meters at 4:51.78. In the women's 5,000 meters, Becca Hind was seventh at 19:38.44 and
Camille Terracina was tenth at 20:09.81.
In the track events on Saturday, Wofford started the day with a win in the women's 4x100 meter relay in 46.19. The men had two teams in the 4x100, finishing sixth and seventh.
Kerrington Johnson won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.58, with
Netanya Linares third at 14.36. In the men's 110-meter hurdles,
Grant Witherspoon was fourth (15.58),
Sebastian LaTorre seventh (17.13) and
Jackson Casey was ninth (20.98).
Jasmine Jefferson picked up a first-place finish in the 400 meters at 55.45, breaking her previous school record by .01, with
Dahlia Cutler tenth at 58.32.
Robert Hilsman was seventh in the men's 400 meters at 49.67. In the 100 meters,
Madeline McNinch was second at 11.90 and
Ella Tennant was fifth at 12.07. Tennant's time was a new freshman record for the Terriers.
Nevius Fisher added a seventh place in the men's 100 meters at 10.70.
Kerrington Johnson added a second first-place finish with a time of 1:01.86 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Marga Van Der Linde was second in 1:05.21 and
Presley Worf was sixth at 1:12.94. In the men's 400-meter hurdles,
Grant Witherspoon was third at 55.30.
Mary Claire Ridgeway was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11:36.23, while
Morgan Roberts was fifth in the event. To close out the track events, the Wofford women were second (:3:50.94) and eighth (4:10.48) in the 4x400 relay and the men were sixth at 3:20.78.
During the field events on Friday,
Jenna Reid was third in the hammer throw at 48.29 meters while
Dani Emmen was ninth at 41.79 meters. Reid added a first-place finish in the javelin with a distance of 45.49 meters and
Netanya Linares (sixth – 30.28 meters) and
Lily Meetze (tenth – 23.93 meters) also placed in the top ten. In the long jump,
Madeline McNinch was second (5.56 meters) and
Rylee Jorgensen was fourth (5.42 meters) for the women, with
Nevius Fisher seventh for the men at 6.69 meters.
The Saturday field events saw
Tanner Henry win the high jump by clearing 2.05 meters.
Rylee Jorgensen was seventh in the triple jump at 11.01 meters.
Chase Edwards was fourth in the men's discus at 44.14 meters.
Ellie Sawicki was eighth in the women's discus at 38.50 meters, which set a new school record by over two meters.
In addition to Wofford, teams competing included ETSU, The Citadel, Western Carolina, Bellarmine, Gardner-Webb, Northern Kentucky, UNC Asheville, and Winthrop. The women were second overall with 132 points, while the men were sixth overall with 52 points out of the twelve total teams.
The teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 22, at the USC Open in Columbia to close out the regular season. The Southern Conference Championships will be held on May 8 and 9 at Western Carolina.
