Baseball Set for Weekend in Winston-Salem

Wofford continues its nine-game road swing, the longest stretch of games away from home this season, with a weekend in Winston-Salem featuring a pair of contests against No. 2 Wake Forest and High Point. The Terriers are 31-10 (8-4 SoCon) after run-ruling UNC Asheville (13-0) and Davidson (16-6). Wake Forest enters at 35-6 (16-4 ACC) after run-ruling No. 5 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday. Its scheduled game Wednesday against App State was canceled. High Point enters at 13-29 (6-11 Big South) after losing at UNCG and at No. 20 Duke in midweek play. The Panthers are riding a five-game losing streak. Wofford and Wake Forest have met 20 times before in a series that dates back to 1896, but they have not faced off since 2003. The Demon Deacons lead the series 15-5 and won both match-ups that season at home. Wofford has played High Point 17 times prior dating back to 1928, with the Panthers leading 12-5. The times have not met since 2006, when Wofford fell twice in midweek games. After facing the second-ranked Demon Deacons on Saturday night, Wofford battles the Panthers in neutral site play Sunday afternoon.

QUICK HITS
• Wofford has won four-straight series to open SoCon play and currently owns a four-game win streak.
• The Terriers top the country in a pair of statistical categories: sacrifice bunts (62) and walks allowed per nine innings (2.05)
• Wofford owns one of the best offenses in the nation, ranking fourth in average (.329) and OBP (.441), sixth in scoring (9.3) and eighth in hits (456).
Ryan Galanie is in contention for the SoCon triple crown, leading the SoCon in average (.442) and RBI (55) while tying for first in homers (13).
Jack Renwick is the best bunter in the nation, topping Division I with 19 sacrifices laid down to pace Wofford's national-best 62 sac-bunts. Renwick is already Wofford's career leader in bunts and has set the program's single-season record.
• The Terrier pitching staff as a whole has been pinpoint, giving up only 83 walks this season. At a rate of 2.05 per nine innings, this is the lowest mark in the NCAA.
• Wofford was picked as the SoCon's preseason favorite in both the coaches and media polls.
• Five Terriers were honored on the Preseason All-SoCon Teams: Matthew Marchal, Luke Stephens, Ryan Galanie and Brice Martinez on the first team with Trey Yunger on the second team.
• Senior righty Matthew Marchal was tabbed as the league's Preseason Pitcher of the Year and has garnered Preseason Second-Team All-American honors by Collegiate Baseball.
• The Terriers have secured back-to-back SoCon regular season titles for the first time in program history.
•  With 109 steals,  Wofford has stolen 100 or more bases in now 10-straight full seasons dating back to 2013, the longest active streak in Division I.

Top Dogs
Wofford ranks among the conference and national leaders in many statistical categories. The Terriers lead the SoCon in walks (212), ERA (4.88), fielding percentage (.980), hits-by-pitch (81), on-base percentage (.441), runs (383, sacrifice bunts (62), scoring (9.3), K/BB ratio (4.22), WHIP (1.30) and walks allowed per nine innings (2.05). Of those marks, two lead the country: sac-bunts and walks per nine. The K/BB ratio sits third nationally, and Wofford's OBP ranks fourth in the NCAA. The WHIP is 17th, and the fielding mark is 15th. To further compound on what is one of the nation's best offenses, the Terriers are scoring the sixth-most runs per game in the country and seventh-most total runs. Wofford sits second in the league in batting average (.329), hits (456), hits allowed per nine innings (9.64), sacrifice flies (21), shutouts (three), slugging (.491), stolen bases (119), steals per game (2.90) and triples (10). Wofford owns the 12th-most hit batters in the nation. The Terriers are fourth in average and eighth in hits.

Walking on Sunshine
Wofford excelled at working the count in 2021, drawing a program record 301 walks as a team, 11th-best in the nation. Last season, Wofford continued to see the ball well and work counts, drawing 277 free passes to rank third in the conference. This aided Wofford's on base percentage, helping elevate it to a .419 mark, first in the SoCon and seventh in Divison I. The Terriers have drawn 212 walks this season, tops in the SoCon and 46th nationally, and their .441 OBP tops the league and ranks fourth in the country.

Nothing for Free
While drawing plenty of walks at the dish, Wofford does not issue many on the mound. Terrier pitchers allowed the fourth-fewest walks per nine innings in the country in 2022 at just 2.79. This lifted the club's K/BB ratio to 3.18, eighth-best in the nation. In 2023, the Terriers have only issued 83 free passes. At a rate of 2.05 per nine innings, Wofford owns the lowest walk rate in the country. This aids in the country's 17th-best WHIP at 1.30. Wofford has issued 19 fewer walks than the second-place team, Wake Forest, with 102 walks at a rate of 2.56. With a K/BB ratio of 4.22, the Terriers are third in the NCAA. Lucas Mahlstedt tossed 24.2 innings before issuing a walk this season when he finally gave one up at Georgia Tech. Despite this, his walks per nine clip of 1.40 is second in the league and ranks 18th nationally. Mahlstedt's 0.95 WHIP is best in the league and ranks ninth in the country.

ON DECK
The Terriers continue their season-long nine-game road stretch with a midweek battle at Tennessee. First pitch in Knoxville is slated for 6:30 p.m. to begin the final month of the regular season.
