SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College Sports Communicators (CSC; formerly CoSIDA) announced today its Academic All-District® selections for baseball, with five Wofford players honored.
Ryan Galanie,
Lucas Mahlstedt,
Luke Stephens,
David Wiley and
Trey Yunger were recognized for their accomplishments both academically and athletically.
The five selections are a program record for a single season. The previous high was two, set three times prior, most recently in 2016. The last time Wofford notched an Academic All-District honoree was last season when
Ryan Galanie earned the recognition. He repeats this season, becoming just the third Terrier ever to earn the selection twice (John Brandt, 2006-07; McClain Bradley, 2017-18).
Galanie is a senior computer science and Spanish double major with a 3.80 GPA. A native of Mason, Ohio, Galanie currently leads the SoCon in batting average (.416), hits (84), on-base percentage (.511), runs (66), RBI (61) and total bases (144). His 15 home runs are third. His average is good for 13
th in the nation, and his hits rank 10
th. Galanie has also swiped 17 bases and owns a .993 fielding clip at first base. He has twice been honored a SoCon Player of the Month this season (Feb. and March).
Mahlstedt is a sophomore physics major with a 3.96 GPA. A native of Ormond Beach, Florida, Mahlstedt currently paces the Southern Conference in ERA with 2.78. He owns a 1.04 WHIP to lead the league and rank 23
rd nationally, and he walks per nine innings clip of 1.89 is second in the conference. Mahlstedt touts a 5-2 record with four saves in 71.1 innings over 22 appearances. Those innings are the most tossed by any reliever in the nation this season. He has struck out 58 batters with only 15 walks issued. The right-hander was named SoCon Pitcher of the Month in April.
Stephens is a senior mathematics major with a 3.99 GPA. A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Stephens is 2-3 on the season with a 5.67 ERA. He owns three saves with 19 punchouts to just five walks over 33.1 innings in 17 appearances. The right-hander pitcher was a Preseason All-SoCon selection and was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List.
Wiley is a sophomore finance major with a 3.88 GPA. A native of Statham, Georgia, Wiley touts a .331 batting average in 38 games played, 37 starts. In 130 at-bats, he owns 43 hits with 41 runs driven in and 40 runs scored. He has knocked eight doubles and two home runs and six triples. Those three-baggers are one short of matching the program's single-season record of seven. Wiley was tabbed as the SoCon Player of the Week on March 6.
Yunger is a senior business economics major with a 3.56 GPA. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Yunger is hitting .363 on the campaign with 70 hits in 193 at-bats over 50 games. He's scored 47 runs and knocked home 44. Slugging .508 with an on-base clip of .444, the outfielder has hit 14 doubles, one triple and four homers. He owns a team-leading 24 steals, which rank sixth in the conference. Yunger was honored as the SoCon Player of the Week on April 17.
The Academic All-District® teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes volleyball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced on June 7.
