Wofford Posts Solid APR Scores From NCAA

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The NCAA released the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) results on Tuesday. Overall, twelve of the seventeen sports at Wofford College were at or above the Division I average of 984 for all institutions. Six sports had perfect scores of 1,000.

This is the second year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year COVID-19 hiatus. Last spring, the Division I Board of Directors approved the release of APR scores but voted to continue the suspension of program penalties.

Each academic year, every Division I sports team calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for remaining eligible and 1 point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.

Rates are an average of the past four years' performance. National aggregates are based on all teams with usable data at the time of analysis. The minimum APR academic standard for each team is 930. Typically, teams that scored below the benchmark would have to face penalties that encourage an emphasis and prioritization on academics. However, due to the current penalty suspension in place, teams will not be subjected to penalties this year.

The Wofford men's cross country, women's cross country, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's lacrosse and rifle teams earned scores of 1,000. The Terriers had the highest or tied for the highest scores in the Southern Conference in those sports as well.

Other teams and their multi-year scored include baseball (983), football (962), men's basketball (970), men's golf (981), men's soccer (953), men's track (984), women's basketball (991), women's golf (989), women's soccer (988), women's track (987) and volleyball (995).

Overall, eight of the seventeen sports at Wofford (indoor and outdoor track are combined) had improved APR results over the 2021 data, four were the same and five sports saw slight declines.

Among schools in the state of South Carolina, Wofford and Clemson led the way with six teams receiving a score of 1,000. Furman and South Carolina had five each, while Presbyterian, College of Charleston and The Citadel had four each.

In the Southern Conference, Wofford led the league with five teams (women's lacrosse competes in the Big South) while Furman and Samford also had five teams with a score of 1,000. The Citadel and Western Carolina had four teams as well, with Mercer at three (plus women's lacrosse in the Big South).
