From the Athletics Director’s Desk - March 2026

Spring has arrived on campus, with Andy's fields turning green and it seems like at least one of our teams is in action every day. As we look back on the winter, the accomplishments of both of our basketball programs are something to be proud of. The women earned a share of the regular season title for just the second time in school history, while the men finished tied for second after being picked to finish ninth. The women's indoor track and field team was third, with Sherika Christie winning three individual titles and Taylor Jennings-Ward winning one as well. The men were fifth with the fourth-most points in school history. The month of April will see the men's and women's tennis teams and the men's and women's golf teams competing in the Southern Conference Championships. Softball, baseball, and women's lacrosse are entering league play as well as we rapidly approach the end of the athletic year.

WELCOME PRESIDENT-ELECT JAY DOWD
Last Saturday, the Wofford College Board of Trustees unanimously elected John Paul "Jay" Dowd III, Ph.D., as the college's 12th president. His tenure begins July 1, 2026. Dowd currently serves as president and chief executive officer of The Citadel Foundation, a position he's held since 2013. He is a graduate of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where he earned a B.A. in history and was a member of the baseball team. He holds an M.Ed., with a focus on student personnel services, and a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of South Carolina. He has more than 30 years of experience in higher education strategy, fundraising, institutional advancement and executive leadership. We look forward to having him on campus this summer.

NCAA LEGACY LAB
Elliot Auderieth, a member of the Wofford men's soccer team, recently attended the 2026 Legacy Lab program hosted by the NCAA leadership and development staff. The four-day event welcomed 41 Division I student-athletes from NCAA member schools to the national office from Feb. 26-March 1.
"The NCAA Legacy Lab was an amazing experience that helped me better understand how the leadership and discipline developed through athletics can translate into meaningful careers beyond sport," said Auderieth. "It was an incredible opportunity to connect with other driven student-athletes from across the country who want to excel in all aspects of their lives while also learning from industry leaders about building impactful careers and leadership beyond athletics."
Legacy Lab is a first-year program designed to help sophomore and junior student-athletes explore entrepreneurship while still competing for NCAA member schools. The programming seeks to equip learners with experiences to enable them to turn their ideas into sustainable ventures. Student-athletes left the four-day themed sessions with the tools to successfully plan and pitch their potential ventures, as well as a strengthened purpose to build their legacy beyond athletics.

NEW TICKETING SYSTEM
This spring, we are excited to announce a new partnership with vivenu for our ticketing platform. This partnership will build a more flexible and connected setup that will give us greater control over our operations while creating a seamless experience for fans, with a full rollout planned ahead of football renewals this summer. By moving to this new platform, our fans and donors will be able to complete all transactions in one place, including parking and Terrier Club donations. All tickets will continue to be digital. "Wofford Athletics has a clear vision of how they want to operate and engage their fans. Our goal is to give them the infrastructure to move faster, stay flexible, and build stronger connections over time," said Darby M. Roggow, Director of College Partnerships at vivenu.

We have welcomed a few new faces to our tremendous staff of coaches this spring. Shawn Watson has announced that Dom Bradshaw, Adam Dulka, Caleb Fuller, Lane Knost, and Collin Shank have joined the coaching staff. Bradshaw will work with the cornerbacks, Dulka will serve as the special teams coordinator, Fuller will oversee the defensive line, Knost will work with the tight ends and serve as co-offensive coordinator, and Shank will coach the safeties. Head volleyball coach Lynze Roos announced the return of Alex Scharpenberg to her staff after spending the last three seasons at USC Upstate as an assistant coach.

2026 EXCELLENCE GAMES
We are looking forward to the 2026 Excellence Games on April 22, where one day of giving will impact all 20 of our sports. The team with the most donors on April 22 will receive $7,000, and there are three wild card opportunities for additional funds available:
  • The team to receive the 250th overall gift of the day.
  • The team with the greatest participation increase from last year.

NATIONAL ATHLETIC TRAINING MONTH
March is National Athletic Training Month, and we are thankful to have such an awesome staff of athletic trainers here at Wofford. Led by Will Christman, his team of professionals from the Sports Medicine Institute at Spartanburg Regional takes great care in preventing, diagnosing and treating injuries and medical conditions for all of our student-athletes.

VOLLEYBALL TARAFLEX FLOOR
Wofford Volleyball has reached its goal to fund a new Taraflex competition court, which has now been ordered. This high-performance surface will improve player safety, reduce injury risk, and elevate the overall student-athlete experience.
While the overall goal has been met, we are still accepting donations that will cover the daily maintenance of the new floor. Click the link below to support!

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATE
Work continues on the Robby Atkins Performance Center at the Joe E. Taylor Center this month. A huge thank you to Robby for his transformational $1.3 million dollar gift, which will impact all 450 student-athletes. You can read more about the gift in the spring issue of "Wofford Today." The project will remove several walls and offices to enlarge the primary strength and conditioning space. It will also include a nutrition station that will benefit all of our student-athletes. The project will be completed in June. The second project is the indoor baseball and softball batting cage and pitching lab, which will take an underutilized space in Benjamin Johnson Arena into a space that can be used year-round. This donor-driven project is expected to begin this summer.
