Baseball Evens Series at UNCG Behind 13-3 Triumph

Terriers tally 13 hits, including season-high three triples

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Friday night's pitchers' duel was followed by a lopsided 13-3 win for the Wofford baseball team over UNCG Saturday afternoon behind 13 hits and the freshman pitching duo of Charlie Weber and Zac Cowan at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Terriers improve to 33-13 (9-5 SoCon) as they even the series, while the Spartans fall to 20-26 (7-10 SoCon).

Wofford needed only two pitchers in the contest, a tandem of freshmen who each delivered. Charlie Weber (2-0) started for the Terriers, tossing 5.0 innings with only a run allowed on four hits. He struck out five. Zac Cowan (2) followed to hurl the final 4.0 frames, giving up just two runs on three hits with four punchouts to claim a save. Neither pitcher issued a walk.

UNCG's starter Grant Aycock (0-2) was saddled with the loss after surrendering five runs on three hits and three walks in 3.2 innings of work.

The Terrier offense bounced back in fashion after a tough go Friday night, depositing 13 hits today. Seven of those hits went for extra bases, split between four doubles and a season-high three triples. All but two of the starting nine Terriers recorded a hit, but both hitless batters worked walks to ensure that all 10 Terriers to bat in the contest reached base. Five of them recorded multi-hit affairs.

Brice Martinez, Dixon Black and Andrew Mannelly each tallied two hits and two RBI, and Trey Yunger and Jack Renwick both notched the other two-hit efforts. Cameron Gill brought home the most runs with three driven in. Martinez added a pair of walks to reach base four total times, and Marshall Toole worked three walks as well. The Terriers received 10 free passes in the game, with Martinez and Toole combining for half of them.

Wofford's three triples were hit by Black, Martinez and Mannelly. Black also added a double alongside Yunger, Gill and Renwick.

The Terriers wasted no time striking, plating two in the top of the first. After Ryan Galanie drew a walk, Dixon Black smoked a triple down the first base line to give Wofford the initial lead. Cameron Gill followed with an RBI groundout to score Black, making the Terrier lead 2-0.

Wofford added three more in the top of the fourth to extend its lead. After Brice Martinez tripled, a wild pitch allowed him to score. Later in the frame, with two runners on, Andrew Mannelly delivered Wofford's second triple of the inning to score two more runs, extending the lead to 5-0.

The Terriers tacked on another in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Marshall Toole worked a walk to make the score 6-0.

UNCG finally got onto the board in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly, making the margin 6-1.

Things continued to unravel for the Spartans in the top of the sixth, as Wofford added four more runs. A wild pitch plated Mannelly to begin the scoring, and Cameron Gill roped a two-run double into right center to continue things. Martinez delivered a single to right that scored Gill, capping off the frame with the score 10-1.

Wofford kept rolling in the top of the ninth with three more runs. An RBI groundout preceded a run-scoring double by Black. Martinez then lifted a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 13-1.

UNCG would score a pair in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run home run, but it was too little, too late for the Spartans. Wofford earned a 10-run 13-3 triumph to even the series.

The teams meet once more tomorrow afternoon in the rubber match of the series. First pitch in Greensboro, N.C. is slated for 1:00 p.m.
