Baseball Defeats Georgia State 7-2 in Midweek Play

Terriers swipe eight bases, tally 11 hits in final non-conference affair

ATLANTA – The Wofford baseball team concluded its nine-game road swing on a good note, besting Georgia State 7-2 Tuesday evening in a road match-up at GSU Baseball Complex. The Terriers tallied 11 hits and utilized eight stolen bases en route to a win in their final midweek and non-conference game. Wofford improves to 34-14 with the triumph while GSU drops to 24-26.

The Terriers utilized three arms in the contest. Mike Eggert started, pitching 4.0 innings with two runs allowed on four hits and a walk. He recorded four strikeouts. Dom Marcoccio (2-0) earned the win as the first reliever after 2.0 innings of work. He allowed no runs and only one hit with three punchouts. Luke Stephens (3) closed out the final 3.0 innings, also notching a scoreless line. He gave up two hits and struck out three. Neither Marcoccio nor Stephens issued a walk, and the trio combined for 10 strikeouts.

Panther reliever Chad Treadway (1-3) suffered the loss after tossing 1.0 inning out of the bullpen. He surrendered two runs on three hits and a walk.

The Wofford offense was clicking with 11 total hits, and all but one of the starting nine Terrier batters recorded a hit. But the lone Terrier to go hitless, Aaron Thomas, worked a pair of walks to ensure that all nine reached base in some fashion. Brice Martinez led the efforts with three hits, and Marshall Toole tallied two. Martinez and Andrew Mannelly each knocked home a pair of runs. Mannelly's lone hit was a triple, and Ryan Galanie notched the other extra-base hit for Wofford with a double.

The Terriers were running wild on the basepaths, swiping eight total bases, one shy of the season high of nine set at Davidson. Toole paced those efforts with half of the swipes, a new career-high four steals for the sophomore. Trey Yunger, Martinez, Thomas and Jack Renwick added the other steals. Thomas' steal was the first of his career.

The walk played a major role in the contest, as the Terrier pitchers issued only a single free pass while the Terrier batters worked six.

Wofford threatened in the top of the first by loading the bases, but GSU was able to hold the Terriers off the board. However, the Panthers would be the ones to strike first in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run for the early 1-0 advantage.

But Wofford got on the board and took the lead in the top of the third. Marshall Toole and Trey Yunger executed a double steal to place runners on second and third for Brice Martinez, who ripped a single back up the middle to score them both. The Terriers moved in front, 2-1.

The Panthers pulled level in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single, making the score 2-2.

The tie did not last long, as Wofford pulled back ahead in the top of the fifth. After Dixon Black and Martinez each singled, Andrew Mannelly cleared the bases with a triple roped down the right field line. The Terriers led, 4-2.

Wofford added two more in the top of the sixth. First, a passed ball allowed Jack Renwick to race home from third. Then, Yunger singled up to middle to score another, making the score 6-2.

GSU threatened to respond in the bottom of the frame with two runners on and only one out, but Dom Marcoccio clamped down on the mound to get out of the jam unscathed, keeping the margin at 6-2.

The Terriers tacked on another run in the top of the seventh by taking advantage of Panther blunders. Ryan Galanie doubled to reach second. An errant pick-off attempt sailed into centerfield, allowing him to race toward third. But a second error on a misplay by the centerfielder then allowed Galanie to keep running and head home, extending the Wofford lead to 7-2.

Luke Stephens shut the door from there, tossing three-straight scoreless innings to ice the contest and seal the 7-2 Terrier triumph.

Wofford returns home this weekend for a key Southern Conference match-up against Mercer at Russell C. King Field. The three-game series begins Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. That contest will be aired on The CW 62 in conjunction with Ingles and the Nexstar Media Group while being simulcast on ESPN+. Game two is set for 3:00 p.m. Saturday, and the finale is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Sunday. The Sunday contest will serve as Senior Day, with Wofford honoring its senior Terriers in a pregame ceremony.
