SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College softball head coach Chelsea Butler has announced the additions of Margaret Axelson and Havalynn Abernathy to the team beginning in the fall of 2023 as transfers.
Abernathy, an outfielder from Kennesaw, Georgia, spent the last two seasons at Georgia State. As a freshman in 2022, she played in 14 games with three runs scored and four stolen bases. During the 2023 season she played in 11 games and scored two runs. In high school at Mount Paran Christian the team won a state championship in 2020. She batted .466 as a senior. She also played basketball, earning All-Region honors in 2020.
Axelson, a right-handed pitcher from Chamblee, Georgia, played the 2023 season at Birmingham-Southern. She was named the SAA Pitcher of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, as she led the SAA with 10 victories and racked up 66 strikeouts in 60 innings pitched, 27 more punch outs than the second-best mark. She made three appearances without allowing a hit. At the plate, Axelson hit .312 with 37 RBI as she started all 40 games. While at Chamblee High School, she earned a total of twelve letters in softball, swimming and lacrosse. She was named first team All-Region, Region Pitcher and Player of the Year and MVP in softball, while adding Offensive Player of the Year honors in lacrosse. Her father played football at Presbyterian College.

"Both young women have college game experience and are incredibly competitive which will be valuable as Team One takes the field for the first-time next spring. Wofford College suits Havalynn and Margaret not only on the softball field, but also in the classroom as both are incredible students. The Wofford softball team will begin play in their inaugural season in February of 2024.
The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to Wofford College and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
