Declan Mettee Named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its weekly men's soccer awards on Tuesday afternoon, with Wofford's Declan Mettee tabbed as the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week. The awards are selected by the league office.

Mettee, a sophomore from Asheville, North Carolina, was a sparkplug off the bench scoring one goal and one assist in one game played. In the 3-2 victory over Gardner-Webb, Mettee was subbed in late in the first half. However, he scored the first goal of the match within his first minute of play to give the Terriers an early lead. He would then assist on a much-needed insurance goal a few minutes later to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

"Declan had a great week of training leading up to the game," said head coach Joel Tyson "We were excited to see his hard work come to fruition this past weekend against Gardner-Webb."

The transfer from Central Arkansas has seen an expanded role in his new home at Wofford. This is the first-career player of the week honor for Mettee and the first for the team this season. Mettee is the first offensive winner for the Terriers since October of last season. In 238 minutes of play this season, Mettee has scored two goals and one assist, leading the team in points with five.

The Terriers face Wake Forest tonight at 7pm in Winston-Salem. Then, the Terriers will begin a three-game homestand starting off with ETSU at Snyder field on October 12.
