LEXINGTON, Va. – The Wofford College men's and women's indoor track and field teams closed out the regular season at the VMI Winter Classic on Friday and Saturday. Wofford had numerous top five finishes and had a school records set by
Jasmine Jefferson (400m) and
Sherika Christie (triple jump).
On Friday in the track events,
Becca Hinds was seventh in the women's 5,000 meters at 19:31.69.
James Moon was ninth in the men's 5,000 meters at 17:37.81 and
James Blackwelder was tenth (18:30.46).
Robert Hilsman was fifth in the men's 300 meters at 35.85. In the distance medley relay, the men were third at 11:06.30 and the women were second at 13:12.43. During the preliminaries of the 60 meters,
Nevius Fisher and
Cameron Dalton qualified for the finals for the men and
Madeline McNinch qualified for the women. In the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries,
Olivia Bagg, Shekika Christie,Isabelle Duchemin, JaKayla Campbell and
Marga Van Der Linde all advanced to the finals. For the men in the 60-meter hurdles,
Grant Witherspoon and Archie Woodward advanced to the finals
During the Friday field events,
Madeline McNinch was first in the long jump at 5.95 meters with
Olivia Bagg fifth (5.70m) and
Presley Worf tenth (5.16m).
Christopher Sheppard was eighth in the men's long jump at 6.60 meters.
Chase Edwards was tenth in the weight throw at 13.35 meters for the men and
Ellie Sawicki was tenth for the women at 13.72 meters.
Ava Cooper added a third place in the high jump at 1.52 meters.
On Saturday, the day began with the mile and
Becca Hinds was tenth at 5:37.83. In the men's 400 meters,
Zion Bennett was second (49.24),
Conor Murphy fourth (49.55) and
Thomas Stamper was seventh (50.38).
Jasmine Jefferson lowered her school record in the women's 400 meters with a time of 55.42 for first place. Danielle King was seventh (59.49) and
Marga Van Der Linde (1:00.94) was tenth. In the 60-meter hurdles,
Grant Witherspoon was third in 8.50 for the men and in the women's event
Olivia Bagg was second (8.98) and
Sherika Christie was third in 9.05. For the men in the 60 meters,
Cameron Dalton was fourth in 6.97 while
Madeline McNinch was fifth for the women in 7.66.
In the men's 200 meters,
Robert Hilsman took eighth place in 22.43 and
Conor Murphy was ninth in 22.58.
Jasmine Jefferson won her second event of the meet with a 24.43 in the 200 meters, with
Madeline McNinch fourth in 24.88.
Mary Claire Ridgeway was second in the 3,000 meters in 10:44.35. To complete the track events, the men's 4x400 relay was third in 3:23.29 and the women were second in 4:05.79.
For the field events on Saturday,
Jake Ross was fourth in the high jump at 1.92 meters.
Christopher Sheppard was third in the triple jump at 13.20 meters and
William Brimm was sixth at 12.42 meters.
Ellie Sawicki threw the shot 12.87 meters to take sixth place.
Sebastian LaTorre was third in the pole vault at 4.05 meters, with
Jacob Lawson fifth at 3.75 meters.
Sherika Christie broke her previous school record in the triple jump by going 12.61 meters.
Teams competing along with Wofford included Appalachian State, Carson-Newman, North Carolina A&T, USC Upstate and VMI.
Up next for the Terriers will be the Southern Conference Championship on February 24 and 25 at VMI.
