HUMACAO, Puerto Rico – Behind a stout 207 performance by
Matthew Larkin, the Wofford men's golf team earned a sixth-place tie in the Palmas del Mar Collegiate hosted by UNCG at the Palmas del Mar Golf Club. The three-day event saw Wofford post an 858 score on the par-72, 7,122-yard Flamboyan Course.
The Terriers tallied an overall score of 856 at 8-under par. Wofford opened with a score of 287 on day one and followed with a 288 on day two. A third round 281 helped the Terriers move up one spot into a tie for sixth with Elon. Wofford's 59 total birdies in the event were third most among the competing teams.
Arkansas won the 16-team event at 27-under par with a score of 837, seven strokes ahead of the host UNCG in second. Wofford finished ahead of the other two SoCon schools also competing, as Mercer finished in a tie for eighth and Samford in 15
th.
The top Terrier was fifth-year
Matthew Larkin, who tallied a nine-under 207 to place in a tie for fifth. Larkin's nine-under is tied for the eighth-best tournament score in relation to par in program history. Larkin opened with rounds of 71 and 70 to sit tied for 11
th after the first two rounds of action. But the Atlanta, Georgia, native surged on the final day, carding a 66 to jump up six spots on the leaderboard and claim his fourth-career top-five finish. Larkin tallied 13 birdies in the event and recorded a pair of eagles, one of only 10 players with multiple.
Michigan's Hunter Thompson secured low-medalist honors in the 99-player field after recording a 15-under 201. With a 63 in round three, Thompson jumped four spots to unseat Mercer's Tobias Jonsson, who finished in second.
Jay Beach tied for 39
th with a 217 score (70-76-71) and finished 1-over.
Harry Jones was also 1-over in 39
th with a 217 after rounds of 71-71-75. Jones recorded 14 total birdies, only four behind the competition's high of 18.
Max Cranford tied for 48
th with a 3-over 219 (75-72-72), and
Major Lenning rounds out the Wofford lineup with a tie for 71
st at a 223 score.
Three Terriers competed as individuals in the event.
Ben Jordan finished in a tie for 44
th with a 2-over score of 218 (72-71-75).
Glover Amick placed in a tie for 89
th with a score of 230, and
Marshall Butler finished tied for 93
rd with a 234 score. Amick and Butler each recorded an eagle in the event.
The Terriers will be back in action in March with the Sea Palms Invitational, hosted by Western Carolina. The three-day event takes place from March 7-9 in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
