Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team played a pair of road matches over the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, the Terriers were defeated 5-2 by South Carolina State at the Hardeep Judge Tennis Center. On Sunday, Wofford picked up a 5-2 win over the College of Charleston at Patriots Point.
At South Carolina State, the Bulldogs took the #1 and #2 doubles matches. At #3 doubles,
Ashe Ray and
Ian Rasheed earned a 6-3 win.
In singles, South Carolina State earned wins at the #1, #2, #3, and #5 positions which clinched the match. At #4 singles,
Robbie Young earned a 6-2, 7-5 win.
Alex Horn lost the first set 4-6 at the #6 position, but rallied to win both the second and third sets at 6-1. The Bulldogs, who were MEAC Champions in 2023, are now 2-4 on the season.
On Sunday at the College of Charleston, Wofford was able to clinch the doubles point. A 6-2 win at the #1 position by
Robbie Young and
Will Fullett, along with a 6-3 win at the #3 position by
Ashe Ray and
Ian Rasheed gave the Terriers the win.
All six singles matches were decided in three sets. At the #1 position,
Max Graham lost the first set 4-6, but responded with 6-2 and 6-4 wins to claim the point.
Ashe Ray lost the first set and won the second set at #2 singles and was leading in the third when his opponent retired. At #4 singles,
Robbie Young won the first set 6-1, lost the second 5-7 and won the match with a 6-1 third set.
Jack Deveney lost the first set at #5 singles before rallying for 7-5 and 6-4 wins.
Will Fullett and
Alex Horn, playing the #3 and #6 positions respectively, each won first sets but came up short in the final two sets. The Cougars fall to 4-3 on the season.
"We had a physical win on the road today," said head coach
Rod Ray. "I'm proud of our men on so many levels. We showed great courage, character and trust."
Wofford (4-5) is back home on Tuesday, February 27, against Belmont Abbey.
