MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team threatened early Friday evening against the College of Charleston at Patriots Point, but the Cougars were able to keep the Terriers off the board en route to a 4-0 win in game one of the series. Wofford drops to 12-3 on the season with Charleston improving to 11-5.
Â
Terrier starter
Mike Eggert (3-1) suffered the loss after allowing two runs in 3.2 innings on six hits. The senior issued no walks while striking out three.
Dylan Rhadans pitched 1.1 innings with two runs allowed on three hits and one walk before handing the ball off to
Alec Bouchard, who tossed a scoreless and hitless inning. His lone blemish was a walk, but he tallied a pair of punchouts.
Mason Compton hurled the final two innings, both 1-2-3 frames with a strikeout.
Â
Charleston's starter Jake Brink (3-0) recorded the win with 8.0 shutout innings alongside three hits and two walks surrendered.
Â
This marks the first time all season that the Terrier offense has been shutout. It is the first shutout suffered by Wofford since May of 2019 at UNCG.
Â
Wofford's three hits were spread evenly among a trio of Terriers:
Brice Martinez,
Daniel Jackson and
Tyler Bak. Martinez reached twice in the contest with a walk added in.
Marshall Toole and
David Wiley both added walks as well. Toole's walk extended his on-base streak, as he remains the only Terrier to reach base in all 15 games of the season.
Â
Wofford put runners on base in each of the first two innings, but the Terriers were unable to get any of them across.
Marshall Toole's lead-off walk was met with no advancement in the first, and two two-out baserunners in the second were left stranded after a groundout.
Â
The Cougars opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a solo home run.
Â
The Terriers looked to respond in the top of the fourth with the first two batters of the inning recording hits. But Charleston worked out of the jam before pushing across another run in the bottom of the inning to lead 2-0.
Â
With back-to-back RBI doubles in the fifth, the Cougars added two more runs for a 4-0 advantage.
Â
Though the Terrier bullpen settled in and held Charleston in check from there, the Cougars continued to stifle the Wofford bats with the score holding as a 4-0 Charleston win.
Â
The teams are set to square off again for game two of the series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
