MOUNT PLEASANT, SC. – The Wofford baseball team bounced back Saturday afternoon with three early runs at Patriots Point before holding firm late to outlast the College of Charleston for a 3-2 win. The Terriers improve to 13-3 while pulling even in the weekend series, and the Cougars drop to 11-6.
Â
Wofford starter
Zac Cowan (3-0) earned the win after delivering 6.0 one-run innings, tying his career high for innings pitched. Cowan allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four, including setting down the side on strikes in the second.
Camden Wicker (1) notched the save as the only other arm used by Wofford, as the freshman tossed the final 3.0 innings. He allowed just a run on four hits with a strikeout. The save is the first of his young career.
Â
Charleston starter Aidan Hunter (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up all three runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.
Â
After being held to just three hits yesterday, the Terrier offense returned to its ways of old with double-digits in today's contest, notching 10 base knocks.
Brice Martinez led the way with three hits, and
Daniel Jackson and
Tyler Hare each tallied two. Martinez and Hare added an RBI apiece, and
David Wiley recorded the other Terrier RBI.
Marshall Toole added a hit, a double, to stretch his on-base streak, safely reaching in all 16 games this season.
Dixon Black also tallied a hit, a double in the first, to pull within one hit of the coveted 200 milestone for his career.
Â
Wofford struck first in the top of the first with an early run.
Dixon Black set the table with a double, and after advancing to third a batter later, he would score when
Brice Martinez ripped a single right back up the middle for the 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Terriers tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead. Martinez and
Daniel Jackson opened the frame with back-to-back hits. Back-to-back RBI groundouts followed, stretching the Wofford advantage to 3-0.
Â
Charleston got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single, cutting the margin to 3-1.
Â
The Cougars pulled within a run in the bottom of the eighth. A sacrifice fly pushed a run across, and Charleston threatened to pull level with the potential tying run on third base a batter later, but
Camden Wicker stood firm on the mound to punch out the next hitter and limit the damage. Wofford still led 3-2 entering the final inning.
Â
The Cougars would not go quietly, putting the tying run on base with two outs in the ninth, but Wicker again remained steadfast. He induced a popout from the next hitter, icing the contest and sealing Wofford's 3-2 victory.
Â
With the series even now at 1-1, tomorrow's finale becomes a rubber match between the squads. Game three of the series is set for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at Patriots Point.
